You have a TTL flash for a right eye? That’s too f’ing cool!

    PS–Congrats on the D70.

Thanks! Just wait ’till I know what I’m doing!

This picture for example: Total accident. I didn’t *want* the flash to go off. But I’ll take it.

    Now THAT’s a wash-n-wear hairstyle!

  • 4. Eli  |  February 28th, 2005 at 8:16 pm

That’s the general idea. It also means I can (and will) go 3-4 months until my next haircut.

Eli – here’s a tip: never admit that the photo isn’t *precisely* what you’d intended.

  • 6. Eli  |  February 28th, 2005 at 8:21 pm

Pfft. It’s not like I have any pride or self-respect or anything.

get a speedlight, quit monkeying around…

    [/insane jealousy]

Man, if my flash never goes off again, I’ll be plenty happy. I don’t think I’ve used a flash since I was 12.

Not trying to diss flash users, I just like knowing that what I see in the viewfinder is what the picture’s gonna look like.

    Unless something really cool happens.

  • 9. Eli  |  February 28th, 2005 at 8:35 pm

Put another way, I think I’m just too damn clueless to use a flash properly, but maybe this camera is smart enough to compensate.

  • 10. ntodd  |  February 28th, 2005 at 9:05 pm

Eli – a TTL flash is wicked handy sometimes. I tend to not use it, sticking to ambient light or lights/brellies, but you can achieve a lot of cool things with a flash, too (play with it in the snow!). Heck, I’ve even taken to putting cheese cloth over the flash to diffuse it.

Caveat about the Auto program: I find it loves to bring up the flash. Bugs the crap out of me. It’s still a cool for some shots, ‘specially quick ones, but I think you’ll find the ‘M’ setting much more useful. The other pre-programmed stuff is just crap.

Yeah, Manual was my plan, until I realized that I hadn’t gotten to the part of the manual that explains how to control aperture or exposure…

    I’ll get there, though.

  • 12. Eli  |  February 28th, 2005 at 9:08 pm

(Hm – can’t use manual because of the manual… How… recursive.)

  • 13. ntodd  |  February 28th, 2005 at 9:49 pm

Eli – switch to ‘M’ and use the two wheels on the right (by the shutter release and LCD panel with all the setting info). Thumb wheel sets shutter speed, the one on the front of the cam sets aperture.

There’s an analog light meter inside the viewfinder, displaying +/-. Really handy. One thing I like to do if I have time is to go to ‘A’, get a quick meter reading, then switch over to ‘M’ and set things manually based on the analog meter.

Excellent! Thanks for the tip. You’d think they could have put that somewhere in the first, oh, 60 or 70 pages…

  • 15. NYMary  |  February 28th, 2005 at 11:42 pm

Gee, Eli. You’ve got a real “borg” quality here…..

  • 16. Eli  |  February 28th, 2005 at 11:48 pm

    And there, and everywhere…

Just call me D70 Of Nine.

Dude – you’re sexy, but not that sexy.

  • 18. Phila  |  March 2nd, 2005 at 8:00 pm

You look surprisingly like me. Go figure!

“Gosh, you got a purty mouth.”

    (/George W. Bush)

(Actually, you look a bit like Andy Partridge in that shot. Not that you actually look like Andy Partridge, but in that shot you look like Andy Partridge, actually.)

(That is, if Andy Partridge wore glasses and was taking a picture of himself with his new Nikon D70 and his face was pretty much obscured except for his forehead and mouth and flash/eye.)
