From a letter to the NYT sent by one David L. Neuner Jr., responding to their editorial urging Democrats not to vote for John Roberts:
The chief justice of the United States is supposed to uphold the law according to precedent and not speculate on how he would rule in future cases. His personal beliefs are not to be applied in how he judges individual cases, something Judge Roberts proved when he refused to answer several questions on how his personal views would shape his rulings.
Breathtaking. I think Mr. Neuner just jumped to the head of the line to replace Sandy O’Connor.
