Codename V, Soccer Of Enlightenment

The shadowy and mysterious Codename V. has been desperately seeking an understanding of the shadowy and mysterious offsides rule in soccer.
It is my fondest hope that my humble effort will bring her closer to her goal of Ultimate Knowledge. (But not closer than the ball and the last defender, because that would, like, give Ultimate Knowledge a free kick or something)

The offsides rule. Damn. I found that after a few games, I knew it when I saw it. Otherwise it is one of the most convoluted and subjective rules I have ever seen.

I couldn’t understand it at all when I tried to play soccer my freshman year, but I found that once I understood hockey’s simpler version, it wasn’t all that difficult, although I’m probably oblivious to some of the finer nuances.

Heaven help you if you had to explain why an indirect freekick that goes into the opponents’ goal without being touched by another player is a goal kick.
I do find that footy’s offsides makes more sense to me than hockey’s though.
