Poor Ellen Tauscher.

All she wants to do is work with Dubya, advance the DLC agenda, and save the Democratic Party from going over the “left cliff,” and those mean ol’ progressives act like she’s Joe Lieberman’s long-lost sister.

WaPo weeps.

One interesting angle to the story is its mention of Jane Harman as a faithless wayward centrist Democrat who treats a tough primary challenge as a reality check instead of a personal affront. According to the story, it sounds like Tauscher is making some efforts to conceal her conciliatory leanings, but it didn’t sound like she’s making any substantive changes. Let’s see how well that works out for her.

UPDATE: I thought maybe FDL would still be too immersed in the Libby trial wrap-up to hit this, but I was a fool. The Good Howie has more detail on why Ellen Tauscher is Teh Suxx0r.

I am one of those firm believers who thinks we need to purge the DNC of the DINO’s, DLCer’s, and centrists.

Democrats have a big tent, true. And Democrats get accused by the likes of LIEberman and Tauscher of betraying that “big tent” meme by thumping on them.

But Big Ten means things like we accept homosexuals as human beings, people of all faith, race, color, creed, and tolerate a wide variety of life style choices. It doesn’t mean we have space in the tent for wannabe right wing tools masquerading as center leftists.

I’m okay with Kos’s strategic perspective that it’s better to have a DINO than a full-blown Republican in a red state or district. But if it’s *not* a red state/district, they have no excuse for being a centrist asshole, and I would like to see them primaried into oblivion or submission.

Of course, primarying can have mixed results. It seemed to bring Jane Harman back to her senses, but it just made Lieberman even *more* determined to be a right-wing asshole.

In the case of LIEberman, he lost the primary but won the Republican vote. The Repukes didn’t have a viable candidate and LIEberman with a wink and a nudge told them he would vote their way. Lamont lost steam after the primary too.

But had LIEberman been an honest man and conceded to Lamont rather than start his own bullshit Democrats for LIEberman Party, I think Lamont would have won.

    Holy Joe creeps me out.

Joe is a pig, plain and simple. There is no doubt in my mind that Lamont would have beaten Schlesinger handily. There was significant doubt in my mind about whether he could beat Joe in the general election, since Joe would pick up both the Republican *and* Clueless Democrat vote, plus a good chunk of the Independent vote. Lamont needed to prove to everyone that Joe is a pro-Bush, pro-war Republican flying a flag of convenience, but he was unable to do so. Joe being a shameless liar didn’t make it any easier.
