Atrios Explains It All To You

Atrios makes an interesting point about Ann Coulter and other insane right-wing media darlings:

The funny thing about Ann Coulter is that conservatives thinks she bothers liberals. That is, in fact, why the like her. But she doesn’t bother us at all. I don’t care what Ann Coulter says about anything. What she embodies is the standards of the “liberal media,” where conservatives are called back again and again, and literally nothing they say can have any negative impact on their careers. And that’s what bothers us.

But does it really matter? As long as Ann Coulter causes us to be bothered, does it really make a difference whether it’s direct or indirect? There’s really not that much daylight between “Ha! In your face, liberals! You’re all stupid gay smelly hippies!” and “Ha! In your face, liberals! I call you stupid gay smelly hippies, and I can get on TV and you can’t!”

It is a bit of a bank shot, a misdirection, in that it’s actually the media rubbing our noses in it rather than Coulter et al, yet most of us end up getting angry at Coulter. Look, if someone puts scorpions in your bed, and they sting you, you’ll probably be rather upset at the scorpions. But they’re just being scorpions, stinging is who they are. The person who put them there is your real problem, and it’s important to figure out how to stop them.

Yes, that’s right: The media is nothing more than a very efficient, state-of-the-art scorpion-delivery system.
