Quote Of The Day

Letter to the editor in tomorrow’s NYT:

Thomas L. Friedman doesn’t include one striking fact in his definition of leadership. When confronting an enemy, leadership seeks not to make its people fearful but rather to make its people fearless.

Contrast this with how the Bush administration demonstrates its leadership qualities.

I would also submit to you, gentle reader, that a real leader doesn’t find it necessary to constantly remind people what a strong, decisive leader he or she is. And I know this because I am a very perceptive and eloquent blogger.

Pardon?

Well, I guess that question’s settled:

Bush did not rule out a pardon but implied that it is not imminent. “I’m pretty much going to stay out of it until the course — the case has finally run its final — the course it’s going to take,” he told Univision during an interview before a trip to Latin America that begins today.

In other words, Bush will pardon Libby if all his appeals fail, but he doesn’t want to flush his party and his legacy the rest of the way down the toilet unless and until he absolutely has to (or at least not before the 2008 elections).

Hang in there, Scooter – no jail for you! No need at all to cop a plea…

Hannabelle Lecter?

This can not be good:

CALCUTTA, India (AP) — When his chickens started disappearing a few weeks ago, a farmer in eastern India figured dogs or jackals were to blame — until he discovered his calf making a meal of his poultry.

(…)

”To catch the culprit, Moloy got up very early … and to his disbelief found that it was his calf which came out from the cow shed and was eating the chickens alive,” Debjyoti Chatterjee, a local resident who filmed the calf eating a chicken, said Thursday.

Bear in mind, it’s still just a calf at this point. What will it become as its appetite… matures?

Nothing To See Here…

The Bushies are acting like they have something to hide:

Federal prosecutors want to gag an indicted former Washington, D.C. madam who has recently threatened to go public with details about her former customers. In a motion filed Monday in U.S. District Court, investigators are seeking a protective order covering discovery material to be provided to Deborah Palfrey and her lawyers. Palfrey, 50, was indicted last week on racketeering and money laundering charges stemming from her operation of the Pamela Martin & Associates escort service, which closed last summer after 13 years in business. In their motion, a copy of which you’ll find below, government lawyers claim that some discovery documents contain “personal information” about Palfrey’s former johns and prostitutes that is “sensitive.” The prosecution filing does not detail the nature of this confidential information, though the identity of Palfrey’s D.C. customers would surely be cloaked if the protective order was signed by Judge Gladys Kessler. According to the prosecution motion, while Palfrey and her lawyers would be able to use the discovery material to help prepare a defense, they would not be allowed to disclose the documents to anyone else (nor use the material for any other purposes).

Republicans involved with prostitutes? Unpossible!

Of course, just as with the Wilkes/Foggo scandal, and GannonGate before it, if the gag order fails and Palfrey does name names, the media will bury it. It’s only newsworthy when Democrats get caught with their pants down.
