Define “Americans.”

Just a thought that’s been rattling around for some time: You’ve seen all the polls where Bush’s approval rating is hovering in the vicinity of 30%, where the war in Iraq (and the surge) are incredibly unpopular, where the American people have completely lost faith in Bush’s honesty and competence, and they even think the Democrats would do a better job at fighting terrorism.
And yet, it seems like all of the pundits and talking heads and Republican mouthpieces operate in a completely different reality, one where Bush is still popular and admired for his straight talk and resolve, where most Americans think the war in Iraq is still winnable and want to see it through to victory, and where everyone knows that terrorism is the Republicans’ ace in the hole because they’re so much tougher on it than the Democrats.

I have a very simple explanation for all of this, which doesn’t even require ignorance of the polls, which is: Only Republicans are real Americans. If you look at just the Republican responses to poll questions, then everything the media and the GOP says is true, Bush and his policies are still popular, or at least tolerated.

Democrats and Independents simply don’t matter because we’re all disloyal traitors who hate America. But those salt-of-the-earth Real Americans understand what needs to be done, and BushCo. still has their support. I’m not sure what happens if even the Real Americans finally lose faith, though. I guess they’ll just redefine Real Americans to mean the Religious Right, or the Rangers and Pioneers.

[…] So not only is Dubya responding to massive devastation by handing out flags (because he is the very embodiment of patriotism, after all), but he’s only handing out flags to Real Americans. […]

I think it’s more a matter of hate of us than love of Bush that keeps that 30% constant.
