From his story on Deputy Press Secretary Dana Perino temporarily filling in for Tony Snow while he gets cancer treatment:
Perino has been flooded with calls of support, including one, she says, from Education Secretary Margaret Spellings, who told her: “Put your big-girl panties on.”
Now that’s what I call an education secretary!

That’s so weird it’s funny.
WTF? “Big-girl panties”?! I mean, I know perfectly well what she means by “big-girl panties,” but in context, that just seems kind of weird. Or maybe a whole shitload ofweird. Maybe even a metric long shitload of weird.

I think I’ve actually heard the phrase before; I was just kind of tickled that the Education Secretary apparently used it to give the Deputy WH Press Secretary a pep talk…

That imperative (together with “and deal with it”) has evidently gained some currency; you can now get it on bumper stickers and coffee mugs. News to me – I heard it on Multi Medium first!

If these are the “grownups in charge”, why does everything they say sound like playground trash-talk?
