And Yet Still More Evidence Of Right-Wing Insanity

Just when you think they can’t possibly top themselves. The right-wing blogosphere is now going gaga over a story by wingnut Melanie Phillips in The Spectator, in which she takes this one guy’s word for it that there were vast underground WMD stockpiles in Iraq, but the Bushies fumbled the ball and let Syria and Iraqi terrorists cart them away, with help from Russia. And because the existence of the WMDs is embarrassing to Democrats, and the loss of the WMDs is embarrassing to Republicans, they joined forced to cover the whole thing up.

Aside from the improbability of a leakproof bipartisan coverup (actually, if this had really happened, I doubt the Democrats would have been allowed to find out about it at all), the part that I find most implausible is that the Bushies would not have instantly trumpeted this find the second they discovered it. I mean, I know they’re superhumanly sloppy and negligent, but this was a find that they desperately needed to salvage their credibility, and there’s just no way they would have allowed their opportunity for triumphant gloating vindication to be taken away.

UPDATE: And another thing – does anyone really believe that any terrorist who got their hands on WMDs would sit on them for four years??? What are they waiting for?

I don’t see how this helps their cause. It still doesn’t justify staying in Iraq. If anything it just reaffirms BushCo’s incompetency.

They had the WMD and turned the other way while they were moved to Syria.

Sort of like hey had Bin Laden cornered and let him get away.

If the justification for war was to protect us from Saddam’s WMDs, then it kinda fails that test.

Whenever someone tries to tell me that Iraq had WMDs, I say, “Yeah, and Bush knows that because he still has the receipts.” (That usually shuts them up quick.) Since I’m pretty determinedly reality-based and a little more well-read than some, I know that chemical weapons and so on have a shelf life, so any that Iraq had would be just toxic waste by now.

When I mentioned that article to my English boyfriend in text chat, he said, “MELANIE PHILIPS, oh CHRiST! XP” Apparently they call her “Mad Mel” over there, which attests to the general sanity thereabouts. (He’s busy reading a couple of Molly Ivins books right now, and faster than I’ve known him to read anything before, so maybe there’s hope for him yet.)
