Dowd And Out

Today’s NYT has this bombshell – a change of heart by former Bush insider Matthew Dowd:

In a wide-ranging interview here, Mr. Dowd called for a withdrawal from Iraq and expressed his disappointment in Mr. Bush’s leadership.

He criticized the president as failing to call the nation to a shared sense of sacrifice at a time of war, failing to reach across the political divide to build consensus and ignoring the will of the people on Iraq. He said he believed the president had not moved aggressively enough to hold anyone accountable for the abuses at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, and that Mr. Bush still approached governing with a “my way or the highway” mentality reinforced by a shrinking circle of trusted aides.

“I really like him, which is probably why I’m so disappointed in things,” he said. He added, “I think he’s become more, in my view, secluded and bubbled in.”

(…)

“I’m a big believer that in part what we’re called to do — to me, by God; other people call it karma — is to restore balance when things didn’t turn out the way they should have,” Mr. Dowd said. “Just being quiet is not an option when I was so publicly advocating an election.”

In another Exclusive Multi Medium Scoop, I have obtained a not-yet-published story on the next step in Dowd’s personal journey of redemption:

AUSTIN, Tex., April 2 – Ex-Bush advisor Matthew Dowd released a statement today apologizing for his role in President George W. Bush’s two electoral victories, and for the death and devastation that followed in their wake, and offering to do whatever he could to make amends.

“I realize now that my allegiance to President Bush and Karl Rove was a mistake and a moral failure of the first order,” read Dowd’s statement. “They have demonstrated again and again their contempt for the value of human life, and the rule of law that our government is based on. They are not simply misguided or wrong, but amoral and corrupt.

“I apologize, and will never stop apologizing, for all the aid and support that I have given them over the years. The damage that they have done to our democracy, to our country’s moral standing, and all the death and cruelty they are responsible for in Afghanistan, Iraq, and New Orleans, will forever haunt my conscience.

“As a Christian, and an American, I know that I must do all that I can to make amends for the harm I have caused. Therefore, I have written to Congressional committee chairmen Waxman, Conyers, and Leahy, and offered to make myself available to testify under oath about this administration’s criminal practices. I am also willing to share any and all relevant e-mails and correspondence that I have accumulated over the years, particularly those regarding the justification for the invasion of Iraq, and our strategies for ensuring the most favorable election outcomes possible.

“As much as it pains me to betray my former friends with whom I have worked so closely, I realize that this is nevertheless my duty as a citizen, and the very least that I can do to put my wrongs right. If I am invited to testify, I will fly to Washington immediately on the first small plane I can find. My burning conscience demands nothing less.”

I hate to break it to you, but… it’s April Fool’s Day.

Oh, how I wish it were true, though.

I wonder if he knows who forged the Niger yellowcake documents…

You know who forged the recipe for yellow cake. It was Nancy Pelosi. She’s going to Syria instead of passing the supplemental appropriations for the cretin’s war on Iraq, and Counselor Dan Barlett notes in an interview today that it’s fitting that she’s conferring with …. terrorists. No, even on April Fool’s day he didn’t quite say ‘fellow terrists’

    NO!

i think he’s honestly repentant. i’d much preferred he’d taken the direction in your april fools joke. well, either way, they will do all they can to destroy him now.

christ, it really is like orwell’s novel.

I think the last thing he would want to do is get in a small airplane.
Look at how dangerous those things can be , with mechanical breakdowns and pilot error and freak weather conditions and transponder problems causing AIM 7 Sidewinder impacts on the engine cowling.

I know, that’s why I threw that in there. I considered adding something about how the RNC had generously offered to provide one, but figured that would be gilding the lily…
