If Of The Decade

And the award for the most creative use of the word “If” goes to… Richard Cohen, in his column about how Dubya is actually a liberal idealist (no, seriously, I’m not kidding):

But if you don’t think [the war in Iraq] was waged on behalf of oil or empire, then one reason for our involvement was an attempt to do some good — rid the world of a really bad guy and make life better for Iraqis and others in the region.

Sure. And if I were a trillionaire, I’d buy the WaPo just so I could fire Cohen for being a colossal blithering asshat.

The only reason I can determine might motivate this sort of twisted supposition from Broder is that he gets good vibes from higher ups at WaPo for generating rage from the left, or approval from the right.

Actually, it’s Cohen, but it’s easy to get them confused. Cohen has more schtick and less Schick.

I think the purpose of the sentence (and entire paragraph) is a convoluted attempt to make Dubya sound like some kind of high-minded humanitarian who just makes bad choices, so he can shoehorn him into this laughable “neoliberal” narrative.

Cohen is a useless, dishonest clown, and embodies, along with Broder, the platonic ideal of the vacuous, self-satisfied Beltway pundit. Feh.

Oh, right, it was the other lamebrain. And I agree, they’re kind of interchangeable from whence the slip. It takes a pretty good amount of insulation from facts to keep up the attitude of ‘live and let live’ toward a White House that doesn’t let live.
