Fear… Is Good. Fear Works.

Okay, so, as I understand it, NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg basically urged New Yorkers to get a grip and not panic over the JFK plot or any other possible terrorist plot, which sent Michelle Malkin into a rage (I know, hard to believe, right?) at Bloomberg for being an insufficiently terrified “ostrich,” which in turn pissed off Maha, who for some strange reason does not like being told to live in constant fear (I dunno, must be a liberal thing).

Bloomberg and Maha’s pragmatic, life-goes-on-and-you-takes-your-chances attitudes are perfectly sane and understandable, and I can certainly sympathize with Maha’s anger at the idea that Seriousness On Terror = Perpetual Fear, but the thing is, she’s not really Malkin’s target audience.

As far as Republicans are concerned, NYC is a lost cause, and I’m pretty sure the crazies like Malkin and her followers would love to see that hive of liberal villainy get blowed up real good. No, Malkin’s screed was directed at everyone else, to make sure no-one forgets that Terrorism Could Strike At Any Moment, and the only truly effective countermeasure is perpetual pants-wetting (which, to be fair, would have not-inconsiderable fire-retardant properties), which is an area where the GOP really excels.

I don’t think a whole lot of people outside of the 28-percenters are really buying this anymore, but aside from gay marriage and immigration, it’s pretty much all the Republicans have left. And if there’s anything the last six years have taught us about the Republican approach to messaging, it’s that when the people are tuning you out, the only conceivable remedy is more and louder screaming.
