What If Gawd Was One Of Us?

I saw this in WaPo’s On Faith section, which I typically don’t read. The column as a whole didn’t do much for me, but I thought the first paragraph was pretty amusing:

I used to be a lector at my parish on Long Island. Have you ever heard the Old Testament read with a Long Island accent? God sounds like Fran Drescher from The Nanny: “And the Lawd Gawd said ta Moses: I am the Lawd your Gawd; you shall nawt have otha Gawds befaw Me.”

Heh heh heh. I’m reminded of a Billy Crystal riff where he imagines his childhood hero, Mickey Mantle, giving the Hebrew “Baruch Atta Adonai” blessing in that thick, laconic Oklahoma accent.

I always thought it was funny that New Yorkers make fun of everyone else’s accent but never seemed to realize they had one too, were just another subset of the larger whole.

And I believe the tagline should actually read: “What if Gawd was One ‘a Us?”

I’ve heard Hebrew spoken with a thick Lawn Guyland accent; it’s terrible what a Lawn Guylander can do to Hebrew, which is actually damned nice to listen to when spoken by a native speaker. (It sounds rather like French, only more so.)

My ex was from there, and he wouldn’t believe anyone when we said he said “quaffee.”

I’ve also heard Yiddish spoken with an Oklahoma accent. That was funny.
