Burning Questions

1) If Republicans and cultural conservatives oppose gay marriage because it somehow damages The Sacred Institution Of Marriage, then what is their objection to civil unions? Is it possible that they’re not worried about the institution of marriage at all, and simply hate gay people?

2) What’s the difference between a nook and a cranny?

I’ve never understood the objections to civil unions. Call it marriage. Its fine by me, but two same-sex people in a monogamous relationship should be able to share and be treated the same as a married couple.

The most obvious is health insurance from an employer.

    Preaching to choir?

At a bare minimum, it seems to me that the Constitution should favor civil unions, on the grounds of Equal Protection. Why shouldn’t gay couples have the same rights and privileges as straight ones.

I favor the German model, where gays and straights can all obtain a civil marriage, but the religious component is between the couple and their church. That pretty well severs *any* church & state issues.
