Medved Hearts Slavery

In addition to debunking Michael Medved’s bizarre and creepy column about how slavery wasn’t really such a big deal, Maha has the same question I did, which is: What exactly is it that inspires someone to say to himself, “Gee, slavery in this country really gets a bum rap these days. I think I need to set the record straight.”?

The best explanation I can think of is that conservatives like Medved are feeling just a teensy bit insecure about America’s moral superiority right now, what with all that illegal war/torture/wiretapping/corruption/politicization of government going on. Medved sees slavery as a huge blot on America’s self-image as Eternal Beacon Of Good for the world, and attempts to wipe the stain away so that Patriotic Red-Blooded Americans (white ones especially) can go back to thumping their chests about how America is the Greatest Country On Earth, and never mind all that bad stuff, because it was all for the greater good.

The dispiriting truth is that the United States is a country with very admirable and lofty ideals of freedom, democracy, and tolerance, which it often professes and rarely embodies.

Also, Michael Medved is a repulsive racist wanker.
