All You Need To Know

Krugman on Obama, Social Security, and the myth of bipartisanship:

Mr. Obama’s Social Security mistake was, in fact, exactly what you’d expect from a candidate who promises to transcend partisanship in an age when that’s neither possible nor desirable.

He is… someone who keeps insisting that he can transcend the partisanship of our times – and in this case, that turned him into a sucker.

[O]n Social Security, as on many other issues, what Washington means by bipartisanship is mainly that everyone should come together to give conservatives what they want.

We all wish that American politics weren’t so bitter and partisan. But if you try to find common ground where none exists – which is the case for many issues today – you end up being played for a fool. And that’s what has just happened to Mr. Obama.

This is the most important reason why I have so much trouble supporting Obama – he still has not caught on to the fact that Republicans act in bad faith. If you buy into their talking points or cut a deal with them, you (and the rest of the American people) will get burned.

Let the GOP display some honesty and integrity for a few decades, and maybe then we can start trusting them. But taking Republicans at their word is how we ended up in Iraq, how we ended up with a Supreme Court and a DOJ that are merely partisan extensions of the Republican Party, how we ended up with an unaccountable cronyocracy, and how we ended up with our Constitution and our reputation in tatters.

Look, I’m sure it’s admirable to want to educate kids about diarrhea in a friendly, non-scary way. I get that. But the whole suction-cup arrows Robin Hood thing just isn’t working for me. I mean, what exactly is he taking from the rich and giving to the poor?

Friday Quote & Elephant Blogging

This week’s quote is from the goofy Wayans Brothers comedy, Senseless:

I’ll throw in the ass hair for free.

And, of course, there’ll be other people’s elephants…
