Missing The Point

There appears to be some debate about whether Rupert Murdoch is making a shrewd move by eliminating the WSJ paywall. But financially, it doesn’t really matter. It’s about propaganda, not profitability.

If you want to get conservative-tilted news into the mainstream, you don’t hide it behind a paywall. That’s why the WSJ’s op-ed section is already free.

Don’t Let The Door Hit Ya…

Well, that’s another two down. Okay, maybe Rachel Paulose doesn’t count because they’re just reshuffling her to main Justice (yippee…), but Fran Townsend is completely gone. Just in case you’re feeling all weepy about it, AP helpfully includes this brilliant blast from the past:

When Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold called on Bush to refrain from using the phrase ”Islamic fascists” on grounds it was offensive to Muslims, Townsend explained the president’s use of the phrase.

”Regardless of what label you pin on it, it is this form of radical extremism that really wants to deny people freedom and impose a totalitarian vision of society on everyone,” she said at a news conference.

Do you suppose they have their irony sensors surgically removed, or are they just born without them?

Speaking of which, I’m wondering how AP said this with a straight face:

Perino shrugged off the notion that a loss of top talent will hurt Bush’s last months in office….

BWAHAHAHAHAHA ow.

Monday Media Blogging

If you haven’t heard of the Nicholas Brothers, you’re in for a treat. There is simply nothing else like them. If they had been around in a time when black men (or women) were allowed to be stars instead of “featured performers,” we probably wouldn’t even remember Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly.

This is my personal favorite, from Down Argentine Way:

I’m pretty sure Fayard does something physically impossible with his legs around the halfway mark.

If that doesn’t do it for you, the shadowy and mysterious Codename V. (along with Fred Astaire) prefers the one from Stormy Weather:

I hope they’re wearing protective cups.

If you can find it, the documentary about them, We Sing And We Dance is an absolute delight. Lots of spectacular dance numbers, and interviews with the brothers, who are absolutely adorable and clearly love each other very much.

If the Nicholas Brothers don’t do it for you, how about dancing construction equipment? (h/t Joe Buddha)

It’s totally worth installing Real Player for, or the free and less-obnoxious Real Alternative.

Great Moments In Court

Someone needs to control their client a little better:

The defending counsel of a man appearing in court in Duisburg is regretting a disturbing slip made during a consultation with their client in recess on Thursday. Never again will they utter the phrase “let us review the evidence” before considering the crime their man is accused of. A less appropriate phrase to be uttered in the company of a flasher would be hard to imagine.

What followed was a scene that disturbed all who observed it. “The court withdrew for deliberations and during the adjournment the man removed his clothes again,” said a spokesman for the court in the western German city.

The 60-year-old, who was in court to appeal against his conviction for running onto the pitch naked during a girl’s soccer match and striking a range of “body builder poses,” apparently needed very little encouragement to strip off in the court, the spokesperson added. “It appears he sees it as art, and views himself as a living work of art.”

State prosecutors saw very little aesthetic value in the man’s latest stunt and filed fresh charges of indecent behavior against the exhibitionist for exposing himself in the halls of justice.

Now that’s commitment!
