Nominee McCain

So it looks like it’s going to be McCain as the Republican nominee. The hard-right crazies like Limbaugh and Coulter hate his guts, but the Republican voters have made by far the best choice by their standards. Most of McCain’s heterodoxy is superficial, and he will be a reliable right-wing crazy on virtually every issue except immigration… much like Dubya. In fact, I think it’s safe to say that a President McCain’s policies and nominees would please the Republican base a lot more than a President Hillary or Obama would please the Democratic base.

More importantly, the media loves loves LOVES McCain, and loves the Straight-Shooting Maverick identity that they have constructed for him. So while he’s just as much of a right-wing wanker as Dubya, the media will use all their up-is-down powers to make him look the moderate, while making the Democratic nominee look like the extremist. It’ll be enough to make your head explode.

McCain has one huge Achilles heel, however, which the media will not be able to minimize or spin away, although they may simply elect not to mention it: The War. McCain wants us to stay in Iraq forever, while Hillary and Obama at least pretend to want to get us out. If the Democratic nominee can label McCain as the guy who wants to keep us in Iraq for the next thousand years, that should be enough to beat him.

Let’s hope they do it.

Friday Quote & Porcupine Blogging

This week’s quote is from the Roberto Benigni segment of Jim Jarmusch’s Night On Earth:

If there’s no room at the Hotel Genius, I’ll take a room at the Hotel Imbecile.

And, of course, there’ll be other people’s porcupines…
