Gary Gygax Tributes

I know it’s a little late for an RIP Gary Gygax post, but there were a couple of GG/D&D tributes that I wanted to highlight.

The first is from the always-excellent xkcd:

…And the second is from today’s NYT:

I particularly like the flow of Exposed To D&D In Early Life -> No -> Sunlight -> Girls.

My own exposure to D&D was pretty limited. When I was in summer camp, one of the counselors was dungeonmastering some of my bunkmates. They were trapped in a dungeon with a giant lobster, and I overheard and started offering off-the-wall suggestions (“How about casting a dehydration spell against the lobster’s eyes to blind it?”) until the DM, either impressed with my ingenuity or exasperated with my kibitzing, finally invited me into the game. I enjoyed it, but I didn’t have any D&D-playing friends in the non-summer-camp world, so it pretty much ended there.

I do remember being fascinated by the earlier editions of the Deities & Demigods rulebook, the ones that still had the Cthulhu gods and monsters in them. I liked how you had to roll a saving throw against madness if you even got within X hundred or thousand miles of Cthulhu or Azathoth. Or Ann Coulter.

OMG! The chart made me laugh. Sending it to family members who played D&D hardcore.

    Good post

    I spent hours playing D&D – I didn’t turn into a geek though :)

    RIP Gygax
