Did I Miss It?

Has anyone compared Rev. Wright to Sister Souljah yet?

And how come Republican candidates are never obliged to denounce right-wing crazies to reassure Americans about how reasonable and moderate they are?

Yup. A panelist last night on “Hardball” (can’t remember which one) claimed that yesterday’s denouncement was Obama’s “Sista Souljah” moment.

And in addition to all the usual stuff about media coverage and hard question, here’s a hypothesis about the Repubs don’t have to denounce right-wing crazies: Because the midpoint for what counts as crazy is so far to the right. I’m sure a far greater number of people think that God was punishing New Orleans than think that AIDS and crack were designed in CIA laboratories. (As a fairy tale, the former has the advantage of not being susceptible to any counter evidence.)

My hypothesis is that, for the media at least, the definition of “mainstream” is “Republican”. Every time they prattle on about What America Wants, or how the antiwar Democrats are “outside the mainstream”, what they’re saying *only* makes sense if you believe that Republicans are the only real Americans.
