Found a statement from the Ohio SOS. Reading between the lines, it looks like the antivirus software may have deleted (or more likely, sequestered) the vote data on some of the machines.
I’m a firm believer in defense in depth for computers. Given how easily some Diebold machines could be broken into, this is probably a necessary thing. It clearly needs better testing, however.
That’s the problem with these things. It’s possible to have secure and reliable systems. That may even be possible if they’re based on Windows. Unfortunately, there needs to be far more investment in testing and design review than I’m seeing so far. Individual election control agencies aren’t likely to be up to that task in any but the largest municipalities and states.
