Playing The Expectations Game For Keeps

One of the time-honored traditions of political campaigning is to lower expectations for debates so that if your candidate manages to keep all their clothes on and avoid uttering any expletives, you can claim victory.  Well, the McCain campaign has really raised their game this time:

Capitol Hill sources are telling me that senior McCain people are more than concerned about Palin.

The campaign has held a mock debate and a mock press conference; both are being described as “disastrous.” One senior McCain aide was quoted as saying, “What are we going to do?” The McCain people want to move this first debate to some later, undetermined date, possibly never. People on the inside are saying the Alaska Governor is “clueless.”

Pow!  Take that, Obama!  There’s no way Biden can win the veep debate now, unless the Obama campaign leaks word that Joe’s had a stroke and can barely form complete sentences.  And even then it might still be a draw.

(Note: It’s not just the McCain campaign – the entire conservative punditocracy is in on the act as well.)
