Today’s NYT Science Times section has a beautiful Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter slideshow. My favorite shots:

Mars 2
Crater interior, displaying evidence of water erosion.

Dianne Feinstein: Objectively Pro-Torture

You’d think a California Democrat might be a little more progressive than this…

According to Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC, Senate intelligence committee chairwoman Diane Feinstein doesn’t support Leon Panetta for CIA chief. Instead, she wants Stephen Kappes, who, according to Mitchell, was “definitely in the line of authority during many of these controversial and some say illegal interrogation procedures”. Unfortunately, this fits into a fairly nasty pattern for Feinstein.

She pushed for a quick confirmation of Michael Mukasey (only one of 6 democrats to vote for him) despite his pro-torture background, she was an enthusiastic backer of General Hayden for director of intelligence, she supports the USA PATRIOT Act, waterboarding, and she was even the main democratic sponsor of a constitutional amendment to ban flag burning. In 2005, she tried to undermine the Alien Tort Claims Act, which is a law from the 19th century that has been revived in recent years by human rights activists to hold corporations responsible for their actions in developing nations.

In May of 2007, she was one of two senators who helped torpedo in committee an Iraq appropriations bill that included a timeline for withdrawal. You would have thought democrats would have learned by now what happens when she gets put on national security committees. But no. In August of 2007 she voted with republicans to “modify the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act by narrowing the scope of its protections to sharply reduce the legal limits on the government’s ability to monitor phone calls and email messages”. She also voted to allow the attorney general to approve his own FISA warrants, totally within the executive branch. She also helped republicans defeat a bill that would have held telecom companies liable for their complicity in Bush’s criminal behavior.

To say the least, her record is pro-torture and anti-constitution. She has recently changed her tone, and now supports legalizing the types of torture that she deems acceptable. The fact that Harry Reid made her chair of the intelligence committee shows just how inept he is, and why senate democrats have been utterly spineless.

It would be nice if her next primary opponent for either Senator or Governor were to point this out.  Although, to be honest, DiFi is so vile that I really wouldn’t shed a tear if she ended up losing in the general election.  I just want her gone.

Also: Harry Reid is a stupid, worthless tool.

Update: Glennzilla had DiFi’s (and the entire Democratic establishment’s) number well over a year ago.
