Congratulations, Democrats! You’re The Proud Owners Of An Economic Stimulus Bill.

So a grand total of zero Republican representatives and three Republican Senators voted for the stimulus package, which means that it totally belongs to Obama and the Democrats, for good or ill.  If the economy continues to tank, the Republicans get to say “We told you so!  You shouldn’t have wasted money on all that stupid spending, it should have been all tax cuts for corporations and rich people!  Now we do it our way.”

Conversely, if the economy improves, or at least levels off, the Republicans are stuck trying to explain why they opposed the stimulus that saved the country (my bet is that they’ll talk about “business cycles” and how the economy would have recovered anyway), which would pretty much be the end of their relevance and power for the next several years.

What worries me is that in 2010 and 2012, we will probably still be in a recession (at least), and the Republicans will be demanding to know why the stimulus bill hasn’t instantaneously turned the recession into a boom.  Which means that Obama and the Democrats will have to be able to make the case that yes, things are bad, but they would have been even worse without the stimulus package, or with an all-tax-cuts “stimulus” package.  And they’ll probably have to do it while facing a stiff media headwind as well.

And then there’s the very real possibility that the Republicans managed to apply enough “OMG it’s too expensive and wasteful!” pressure on the stimulus bill to render it ineffective, in which case making the case that it worked becomes even more difficult.

All in all, this was a high-stakes gamble by the GOP to obstruct and sabotage the stimulus, but it’s one they have a good chance to win.  In which case, everybody else loses, but as long as they win some elections, the Republicans don’t really care.
