Still, Could Be Worse.

As much of a disappointment as Obama has been, sometimes we get little reminders of just how lucky we really are:

Speaking on Fox News this morning, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) condemned the Iranian election as a “sham,” declaring, “I hope that we will act.”

It is necessary to bomb the protesters in order to save them…

Republican Racist Racial Outreach Continues

I think maybe they’re missing the point…

Wonkette notes that a racist e-mail was sent out by a legislative staffer for Tennessee GOP state senator Diane Black. The staffer, Sherri Goforth, e-mailed this composite picture of the country’s 44 presidents, which represents President Obama with only a set of eyes:

44presidents1

Nashville Is Talking asked Goforth about the e-mail:

When I asked her if she understood the controversial nature of the photo, Goforth would only say she felt very bad about accidentally sending it to the wrong list. When I gave her a second chance to address the controversial nature of the email, she again repeated that she only felt bad about sending it to the wrong list of people.

“I went on the wrong email and I inadvertently hit the wrong button,” Goforth told NIT. “I’m very sick about it, and it’s one of those things I can’t change or take back.”

She didn’t feel bad about sending it, she only felt bad about sending it to the wrong list.

Still, I suppose this shouldn’t be a surprise.  After all, every Republican apology include an “if anyone was offended” clause (as if there were some kind of reasonable expectation that most decent people wouldn’t take offense comparing Michelle Obama to a gorilla), and if Goforth had only sent it to her list of racist friends, none of them would have been offended, ergo there would have been nothing to apologize for.  No harm, no foul.

You know, considering that most Republican apologies usually also contain an “I was just kidding!” clause in addition to the “if anyone was offended” clause, it’s only a matter of time before they shorten their standard apology to simply, “I’m sorry you don’t have a sense of humor.”

Great Moments In Republicans Being Totally Not Racist

Offended?  Why would anyone be offended?

Commenting on a report posted to Facebook about a gorilla escape at a zoo in Columbia, S.C., Friday, longtime GOP activist Rusty DePass wrote, “I’m sure it’s just one of Michelle’s ancestors – probably harmless.”

Busted by South Carolina political blogger Will Folks, DePass told WIS-TV in Columbia, “I am as sorry as I can be if I offended anyone. The comment was clearly in jest.”

Then he added, “The comment was hers, not mine,” claiming Michelle Obama made a recent remark about humans descending from apes. The Daily News could find no such comment.

As a New Yorker in exile, I also loved this quote from 2007:

“Most of us, of course, particularly in South Carolina, never gave a damn about New Yorkers, but somehow the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, made those people Americans again,” he wrote in a 2007 Op-Ed endorsing Giuliani.

I just love it when Republicans decide who the real “Americans” are.
