The Fierce Advocate

I remember watching some nature documentary with my girlfriend which tried to claim that pandas are actually fierce predators. I had kind of the same reaction to that as when Obama claimed to be a “fierce advocate” for Teh Ghey. Right after he picked homophobe Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at his inauguration. And after he went to Saddleback to kiss Rick Warren’s ring. And after he toured with Donnie McClurkin.
In fact, I would be hard pressed to think of a single example of Obama really sticking his neck out for gay rights. He announced his support for a bill expanding domestic partner benefits (but not health insurance) for federal employees, and he made so-far-empty promises to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and so far that’s about it. The snubs have far outnumbered the accmplishments, and I think the gay community may have noticed.
If I didn’t know better, I’d think that Obama has made a cynical calculation that A) There are a lot more homophobic voters than homosexual ones, and B) That gays will continue to support him and the other feckless Democrats because they have no other alternative. He might be correct about the first (although I’d like to think that being morally right would count for something), but he’s playing with fire on the second.

I think he’s actually making a cynical calculation that all this stuff can wait until his second term and everyone will then forgive him. This strategy is very likely to bite him in the butt.

No, I think he really doesn’t give a shit. He may try to convince the gay community that he’s going to help them out in his second term, but he won’t.

I’m afraid I agree with Eli, here. It’s hard for people to break their habits, and Obama’s habit of avoiding sticking his neck out for any group that supports progressive causes, whether it’s gays, women, or civil libertarians, is a deeply ingrained one.
