Not Just An ATM

No, Obama realized that the grassroots can be used for far more than just raising money. Unfortunately, the emphasis is still on the word “used”, as his relationship with Organizing For America is decidedly one-way – he’s quite happy to use them as ground troops to win elections or sell whatever watered-down compromise he’s made with Republicans or Conservadems (although he doesn’t seem to use OFA very effectively to pressure those Republicans or Conservadems to give any ground), but he has nothing but contempt for what the progressive base might want from him, like showing strong leadership and holding his ground on any of the issues he campaigned on.

Obama is not trying to empower the progressive grassroots; he’s trying to co-opt them.

Just tell me how someone grows up in a household where money is tight in a country where his skin color alone can get him arrested, gets a boost into college because of affirmative action, works as a community organizer, sees the problems of the poor every day, gets helped by the left to become a state Senator, US Senator, and now president, and doesn’t think we need a public option.

It’s like the guy wasn’t there when he lived his life.

I mean, I have read some Alinsky, and I am pretty sure that among his principles for successful organizing was not “F–k your friends.”

Though Hillary does it all the time, so maybe it was in there somewhere among Alinsky’s writings and I just missed it.

Again, I think he decided that community organizing could be very… useful. He learned the techniques for mobilizing people, he learned the language for inspiring people, but he apparently never managed to absorb much of a moral code to go along with them.

That’s certainly been my impression of Obama’s activism, Eli. In fact, he almost seems to have been one of those caricatures of liberal activists – so far above the fray that they don’t really learn much about the people they’re supposedly helping.

How ironic that he turned out to be so conservative. ;-)

He could have done the full Clarence Thomas, and been elected as a Republican.

Come to think of it, maybe that was Plan B.
