Friday Quote & Panda Blogging

This week’s quote is from a strange, underrated little film called Six-String Samurai. I’m not sure I can even begin to explain it…

Last kid that crossed that line, I had to summon up the spinach monster with my rock ‘n’ roll magic.  Spinach monster grabbed him, pulled him underground, made him eat spinach all day.  Rumor has it, kid… he’s still there.

And, of course, there’ll be other people’s wee baby pandas…

There’s more where that came from.

The Charade Is Finally Over

After twisting in the wind for over a year with zero support from Obama, Dawn Johnsen has finally had enough:

Dawn Johnsen, the president’s appointment to the Office of Legal Counsel whose nomination has lingered in Congressional limbo for more than a year, has officially withdrawn her candidacy for the post, according to a statement sent over from the White House.

“I am deeply honored that President Obama, the Attorney General and a strong majority of the U.S. Senate have demonstrated faith and confidence in my ability to lead the Office of Legal Counsel,” Johnsen said in a statement asking for the withdrawal. “OLC plays a critical role in upholding the rule of law and must provide advice unvarnished by politics or partisan ambition. That was my guiding principle when I had the privilege to lead OLC in a past administration. Restoring OLC to its best nonpartisan traditions was my primary objective for my anticipated service in this administration. Unfortunately, my nomination has met with lengthy delays and political opposition that threaten that objective and prevent OLC from functioning at full strength. I hope that the withdrawal of my nomination will allow this important office to be filled promptly.”

I’m kinda reading her statement as “I will not be used as Obama’s excuse for blowing off the Constitution any more.  Enough is enough.”  Of course, she’s assuming that Obama won’t simply say that this proves that he can’t get anyone “controversial” confirmed, and nominate some sleazy Alberto Gonzales-style enabler.

Why Didn’t This Occur To Anybody?

Hey, here’s a crazy idea: If a whole bunch of people need jobs, why not just hire them to do positive stuff that we need done anyway? We have 10% unemployment and our infrastructure is falling apart – it’d be a win-win, just like it was 75 years ago.

Details, Details…

Ah yes, a very minor teensy-weensy oversight, but really, how many people associate the Confederacy with slavery?

An African-American Virginia lawmaker said Wednesday that he is not yet ready to accept an apology from Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, suggesting McDonnell’s misstep regarding Virginia’s confederate history is part of a pattern which calls the governor’s sincerity into question.

The Republican governor apologized earlier Wednesday after coming under criticism for issuing a proclamation that declared April to be Confederate History Month in the state but which made no mention of slavery.

“The failure to include any reference to slavery was a mistake, and for that I apologize to any fellow Virginian who has been offended or disappointed,” McDonnell said in a statement. The governor also announced that his proclamation would be amended to mention slavery and call it “an evil and inhumane practice.”

So the Confederacy fought a civil war to protect its right to “an evil and inhumane practice,” but it was still awesome enough to deserve its own “History Month”.  Kinda like how the Third Reich was awesome except for that whole Holocaust thing which we almost completely forgot about, but hey, let’s not dwell on negatives.
