Strawman Of The Day

Thomas Sowell courageously attacks those who oppose the creation of wealth.

The thing is, no one that I know of is actually opposed to wealth creation.  But I and most other progressives are opposed to creating wealth solely for the enrichment of the wealthy.  If everyone else had a little more wealth, that just might create a virtuous cycle of consumer demand, increased employment, and yes, more wealth.

    You’re missing the point, Eli.

There’s a difference between wealth creation and money accumulation, and the right deliberately conflates the two.

Wealth creation includes things like education, invention, preservation, healing, discovery, and so on. No money need be directly involved.

The genius of capitalism is that it makes it possible to use money to measure wealth creation and store created wealth. Of course, if the rules that it uses for measurement are idiotic, like, “You get more money if you have money,” then the results are idiotic.

Everyone can have more wealth simply by being kind to his/her neighbor, raising his/her kids, and so on. What progressives want is more money (in exchange for useful work).

If I were running the Democratic Party, my slogan would be “America needs a raise.” That’s what this is about. More money for us. Less for them.
