Friday Quote & Puppy Blogging

This week’s quote is from Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable’s last film, The Misfits:

Well, that’s the way it goes. Goes the other way too, though – don’t forget that.

And, of course, there’ll be other people’s wee bulldog puppies…

Pot Vs. Kettle

This is just too hilarious:

“I have never seen Sen. Schumer address any issue unless it was political in the United States Senate,” McCain told Van Susteren. “Bob Dole once said, the most dangerous place to be in Washington D.C. is between Sen. Schumer and a television camera.”

“That holds true today,” he added.

In other news, Kim Kardashian accused Paris Hilton of being a shallow publicity hound.

Unsay Away The Gay

I suppose it makes a warped kind of sense.  If Republicans believe that repeating the same lie enough times will make it true, then it stands to reason that they would also believe that not talking about something real can make it cease to exist…

Darrelle Revis Has Decided To Make Jets Fans Hate Him

I wonder if he’s really saying “I want more money” – ‘cuz it kinda sounds like maybe he’s saying “I don’t want to play in New York.”

Could’ve Happened To Anybody

Sure, this seems plausible:

The boss of a truck driver caught with 268,000 rounds of ammunition in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, said Thursday that his employee took a wrong turn on his way to deliver what he insists was legal cargo bound for an Arizona dealer.

Dennis Mekenye, operations manager at Demco freight company in the Dallas suburb of Arlington, said Jabin Bogan, 27, made “a very honest mistake” when he took a wrong turn that eventually led him to Mexico on Tuesday.

(…)

The federal prosecutor’s office in northern Chihuahua state said Bogan is being held pending investigation on illegal weapons charges. Spokesman Angel Torres said the driver claimed he had no goods to declare. Torres said a gamma-ray inspection of the truck’s cargo compartment revealed the presence of metal canisters holding the ammunition. He says the bullets were hidden under pallets in the truck’s floor.

I guess the driver must have thought the border checkpoint was just some kind of fancy tollbooth.  And he wasn’t trying to hide the ammo, he was just making more efficient use of the available storage space.

Friday Quote & Dog Blogging

This week’s quote is from The Barefoot Contessa with Humphrey Bogart and Ava Gardner, which I apparently saw:

Some of them are happy because they are beautiful – some of them have to be happy because all they are is rich.

And, of course, there’ll be other people’s ridiculously happy dogs…

Obama Administration Identifies And Fixes Key Flaw In Unemployment Insurance

The problem is that all of these people are just sitting around and collecting unemployment checks without doing anything to enhance corporate profitability.  But Obama has the solution!

Friday Quote & Pug Blogging

This week’s quote is from the Wallace Shawn/Andre Gregory classic, My Dinner With Andre:

When I was 10 years old, I was rich – I was an aristocrat. Riding around in taxis, surrounded by comfort – and all I thought about was art and music. Now I’m 36, and all I think about is money.

And, of course, there’ll be other people’s maternal pugs…

NRA Turning Gun Culture Into Death Culture

I don’t agree with the gun lobby’s reckless and often tragic insistence that everyone should be allowed to purchase and carry guns everywhere, but I can at least understand it.  And I can see where the unfortunate wording of the 2nd Amendment gives them constitutional cover.

But what I don’t get, and what disturbs the hell out of me is that it’s not enough for them to put deadly weapons in the hands of everyone who wants one, regardless of how violent or racist or sociopathic they may be – they want to make it easier for them to use those weapons too.

Isn’t facilitating unfettered gun ownership already Mission Accomplished?  Does forbidding someone from shooting an unarmed teenager in the street because they supposedly feel threatened really infringe on the right to bear arms?  Is owning a handgun just not as appealing if there aren’t enough opportunities to use it?  Was that depressing gun sales?  Did the NRA take a poll and find that potential gun buyers were holding off because it just wasn’t worth it if The Man wouldn’t let them get away with murder?

And please, since eliminating all restrictions on gun ownership and use is a conservative value, explain to me how lowering the bar for the use of deadly force squares with the “culture of life” that the right loves to crow about and accuse liberals of opposing?

The Dirty Tricks Gap

I can’t quite bring myself to advocate stooping to James O’Keefe’s level, but I have to wonder what kind of outrageous things a progressive version of him might get members of conservative organizations to say.

Cowardice Or Corporatism? Part 117

Is Obama deathly afraid of conservative attacks on “job-killing regulations” and “the nanny state”, or does he simply agree with them?  Either way, he’s hamstringing his regulators just like his predecessor did.  I particularly like this tidbit about the guy Obama put in charge of regulating the regulators:

Cass R. Sunstein, director of the White House’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, advocates what he calls “libertarian paternalism,” a regulatory philosophy that encourages rather than mandates changes that improve or save lives.

With Democrats like these, who needs Republicans?
