I MUST see this movie.
There is a filthy rumor that not all of the clips are actually from Stacey!, but obviously that’s absurd.

This week’s quote is from Next Stop Wonderland, with Hope Davis and Philip Seymour Hoffman:
Most people are blind to the impact that small rubber parts have on their daily lives.
And, of course, there’ll be other people’s broccoli-hating puppies…
You go, puppy! Show that broccoli who’s boss!

As if there weren’t more than enough of them already. But in addition to being a corrupt dishonest dictator, he’s also an incredibly stupid bigot:
Mugabe, who has repeatedly described same-sex partners as “lower than dogs and pigs,” has vowed not to allow gay rights to be included in a new constitution being drafted.
“Mothers were given the talent to bear children. That talent doesn’t belong to men,” he said.
“When God created Adam … if Adam had desired a person like him it would not have made him any happier,” Mugabe said.
“When a man says he wants to get married to another man, we in Zimbabwe don’t accept it. We can’t talk of women’s rights at all if we go in that direction. It will lead to extinction,” he said.
That’s so adorable that he thinks that marriage equality somehow infringes on women’s rights. I guess he’s either never heard of lesbians, or doesn’t consider them gay.
But it’s his extinction argument that really takes the cake. Sure, if everyone was in a same-sex marriage, and there was no fooling around, and no in vitro fertilization, then yes, that would lead to extinction, but that’s an awfully big leap from letting gay people – who have been known to want children, by the way – marry.

Mr. Mandate just wants Obamacare to be loved:
Gruber hopes for a not-too-distant future where Medicare and the health reform law enjoy the same status in the public’s mind. “My dream is of a world, 20 years from now, where someone says, ‘Keep the government’s hands off my ACA,’ ” said Gruber, a key architect of both Romneycare and Obamacare.
Well, you know, if you want it to be loved like Medicare, maybe you should have modeled it on Medicare. Just a thought.

This week’s quote is from What’s New Pussycat, starring Peter O’Toole and written by Woody Allen:
It’s the safest place in the world… provided the combined weight of the two people does not exceed 1400 pounds.
And, of course, there’ll be other people’s slow lorises…
They appear to be making out.

Not only is it not okay when our guy does it, it’s actually worse, because he’s supposed to be the one who doesn’t do it. That’s why he was our guy in the first place.
I will not be an apologist for betrayal, and I will not adjust my core principles based solely on who’s in power.

Well, Rush and the Hall Of Famous Missourians certainly seem confident about how well-loved he is…
The conservative radio talk show host was inducted in a state Capitol ceremony. But in a break from tradition, the public and Democratic lawmakers were not allowed into the chambers of the House of Representatives, which were locked and guarded by armed members of the Missouri Highway Patrol while the ceremony took place.
In fact, news of Limbaugh’s induction ceremony was not made public until 20 minutes before it began. The event was invitation-only and attended by a crowd of mostly Republican lawmakers and staff.
Well, that’s certainly not paranoid at all – it only sounds like a presidential visit to Afghanistan. This is my favorite part:
Limbaugh, who’s from Cape Girardeau, praised Tilley for standing up to critics who felt his inclusion in the hall with 40 other members was not appropriate.
“He hung in. He was tough. He laughed at them when they called his office, which is what you have to do because they are deranged. They’re literally deranged,” Limbaugh said. “He stood up to it and in fact enjoyed it and threw it right back at them. I want to thank him for that.”
Oh yeah, everyone involved is so very brave and tough, standing up to naysayers behind locked doors and armed guards.

Universal access to education is a good thing, and something every country should strive for. Universal 5- and 6-figure student debt, not so much.

Despite what conservatives would have you believe, unfettered capitalism is not actually a force for good. The profit motive, at its core, is all about charging the highest possible prices you can get away with, at the lowest possible cost. Which is an open invitation to cheating, corruption, price gouging, union-busting, and shoddy (if not downright dangerous) goods and services.
True, some companies have consciences or strive to differentiate themselves with quality service, but the free market does not guarantee either, and such companies are the exception rather than the norm.

This week’s quote is from the Woody Allen classic, Manhattan:
Your self-esteem is just a notch below Kafka’s.
And, of course, there’ll be other people’s leopards…
Alas, there is no actual kissing. But it is fascinating to see how similar the body language of the big cats is to that of their wee domesticated cousins.

The National Association Of Manufacturers is terribly offended by the fact that some California teens are suing the government to reduce carbon emissions:
“At issue is whether a small group of individuals and environmental organizations can dictate through private tort litigation the economic, energy, and environmental policies of the entire nation,” wrote National Association of Manufacturers spokesman Jeff Ostermeyer in an email.
But a small group of ultra-rich individuals and giant corporations using their money and lobbying power to dictate the health of the entire planet and everyone on it, that’s totally okay.

Hooray, Obama now says he’s in favor of marriage equality instead of saying he opposes it. But as Gawker points out, it’s not going to translate into any kind of positive action, it’s just meaningless lip service (leaving it up to the states does not equal support in any meaningful way) – Obama has simply calculated that he needs to get the LGBT community and their allies off his back and into his wallet before the election.
But make no mistake: Obama “supports” marriage equality like he “supported” the healthcare public option, EFCA, Dawn Johnsen, and Liz Warren – he’ll make tepidly positive statements and nothing else. What Obama says he supports is meaningless: Always watch what he fights for, and what he doesn’t.

Horrible. Just horrible. Another new low in police brutality.
Arbitrary violence is nothing new. The apparently systematic use of sexual assault against women protestors is new. I’m not aware of any reports of police intentionally grabbing women’s breasts before March 17, but on March 17 there were numerous reported cases, and in later nightly evictions from Union Square, the practice became so systematic that at least one woman told me her breasts were grabbed by five different police officers on a single night (in one case, while another one was blowing kisses.) The tactic appeared so abruptly, is so obviously a violation of any sort of police protocol or standard of legality, that it is hard to imagine it is anything but an intentional policy.
Tell me again how we’re a beacon of democracy and the greatest country in the world and everyone else should be totally envious of us.
