Friday Quote & Panda Blogging

This week’s quote is from the original Dudley Moore/Peter Cook Bedazzled:

“You’re not wearing nylon underwear, are you?”

“No, why?”

“It disintegrates at high speeds.”

And, of course, there’ll be other people’s wee pandas…

Friday Quote & Cat Blogging

This week’s quote is from The Bedford Incident, with Sidney Poitier and Richard Widmark:

“It takes a lot of work being a mean bastard.”

“Indeed. Sometimes I can’t help but admire how effortlessly you do it, Captain.”

And, of course, there’ll be other people’s (big) cats…

Friday Quote & Cat Blogging

This week’s quote is from the hilariously terrible 80s out-of-control-robot-cop movie R.O.T.O.R.:

The only difference between heroes and villains is the compensation they take for their services. At our pay scale, I’d say we were heroes.

And, of course, there’ll be other people’s lions…

Whistling Past The Great Filter

I am just not buying the happy theory that we have already passed through “The Great Filter” that prevents the rise of spacefaring civilizations.  It completely overlooks the possibility that advanced technological civilizations become so enormous and voracious that they are very much at risk of depleting their resources and bringing about the ecological collapse of their planet long before they develop the capacity for interstellar travel.

That certainly seems to be the path that we’re on, unless we come up with a technological fix or finally develop the will to rely on less destructive forms of energy, neither of which seems to be happening anytime soon.
