Thanks to what can only be called a Christmas shipping miracle, I managed to get my new D300 camera in my hot little hands less than two hours before I had to leave for my grandfather’s 90th birthday. So without further ado, here’s the first crop of photos taken with the new photobeast:

When life hands you a wing seat, make, um… wingseatade.

The Newark airport, in glorious living color.

And in black & white.

I was mainly looking to test the D300’s high ISO performance. It’s pretty good – definitely better than the D200 was.

Some more aerial photos. Next up, the National Museum of the American Indian in DC, which has some really lovely interior architecture (the exterior’s pretty cool too, but more photographically challenging).

Some appetizers before I get to the NYC main course…

Sunset from the plane to NJ.

More advanced sunset.

I did take a handful of shots from the plane back from NYC, most of which were somewhere between Flawed and Mediocre, including my one good look at Manhattan which was hopelessly out of focus. But there were a couple that were reasonably salvageable.

Umm… clouds. And a plane wing. (Note To Self: Start booking seats in front of wing)

I’m pretty sure the woman next to me thought I was insane when I frantically grabbed for my camera every time the plane banked to the left…

Okay, I have ventured out on the patio near the Wifi Salon, and I have a nice steady Low signal instead of an intermittent Very Low one. Woohoo! So now I can post some photos, except I’ve only just managed to get through the ones I took from the aeroplane.
Um, between the outdoor light and the laptop display dimming from being on battery power, it’s possible I may have mis-tweaked some of these, especially the last one. I may have to come back later and readjust.

Well, I got stuck behind the wing again. Figured I might as well make the best of it.

Clouds, as promised.

More clouds. And Mr. Planewing again.

Getting pretty close to sunset. We began our descent and had to turn off electrical devices (i.e., fancy cameras) just as it was getting good.

Well, I’ve been travelling all night, and the guy in the seat next to me was kinda squirmy-thrashy, so I really need to crash hard. And when I wake up, I’ll have about 1200 vacation photos to try to wade through. Eep.
In the meantime, here are some beauty cloud shots to tide y’all over and annoy my dad. Enjoy!
You can also check out the Viking Week Festivities, presented by the shadowy and mysterious Codename V.
UPDATE: Hmm… Recent evidence that has come to light suggests that it might not be my dad I would be annoying. But as long as I’m annoying somebody, I’m happy.

Mmm… Clouds…

Mmm… More clouds…

I got a bunch of really lovely cloud pictures looking out of my window to and especially from South Carolina. Here are a couple of my favorite “from” shots.
