This is the last of the Coney Island photos for quite some time, although I do intend to go back after they make it over, just to see if they’ve stayed true to Coney Island’s lurid spirit.

Some sort of arcade game, of the non-video variety.

Oh dear.
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
I think this is an appropriate note to close on.
This is by no means the last of my NYC photos, and then I have DC and CA photos after that, still yet to be processed…

I’m almost out of Coney Island photos; just one more post after this one.
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
I liked the ponytail action on this one, and didn’t even notice the strangely envious look on the girl on the right.

Ahhhrrr, matey! ‘Tis Pirates Of The, um, Mid-Atlantic.

This guy is just kinda sad-looking, really.

If you ever wondered what Howdy Doody would look like as a pirate…
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
You cannot tell me this guy did not get beat up constantly by the other pirates.

Just some more random rides from Coney:
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
The interior of a wee pirate ship, complete with non-functional redundant steering wheels. At least you can’t see the siren lights on the front…
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
I found this kinda disturbing, but the kids seem to enjoy it.
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
No-one wants to ride The Scrambler, which makes me wonder just how literal the name is.

Just some miscellaneous Coney Island photos that don’t really fit into any category:
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
As I walked away, I actually heard someone behind me indignantly demanding, “Why was he taking a picture of that???” Fourlegs just gave them a helpless “What can you do?” shrug.

Astroland as viewed from the Boardwalk.

I love the random toddler who wandered into the frame. I don’t think I even saw him when I took the shot.

Another one of the Coney Island star attractions I wanted to get pictures of was the Cyclone, which uses ricketiness instead of loop-de-loops to scare its riders:

Some more completely non-scary rides from Coney Island:
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Well, okay, maybe the idea of a giant shoe giving me the eye is a little scary…
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
One of the defining moments of our Coney Island excursion was when fourlegs was taking pictures of the kids on the ride, while I was waiting for them to clear out of the way so I could photograph the track. Hey, it has cool robots on the columns and everything.
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
I suppose it will be a bit scarier once it leaves the ground. Also, note the color scheme, and then try to tell me that liberals aren’t patriotic.

I’ve never really been much of a thrillseeker, so rollercoasters and even ferris wheels have very little appeal for me (fourlegs and I did toy with the idea of going up on the bigass Wonder Wheel to get some aerial shots, but we had our hands full as it was). No, when I was a kid at Coney Island, what I loved was the bumper cars (um, and the video arcade). All these years later, they still look pretty damn fun:

Teeheehee!!! *ahem* Sorry.
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Captain America feels very strongly about the head-on bumping, because it makes Lady Liberty cry. I think it is very possible that his tragic assassination was the work of a shadowy head-on bumping crime syndicate.

But what about head-on grinding?

Now, this was what I vaguely had in mind when I decided that I had to get me some pictures of Coney Island before it got all updated and modernized: Lurid funhouse horror thingies!

I got a bunch of great reaction shots from this one ride, which tended to flip people upside-down a lot. In the interests of space, I’ll just post my favorite one, plus a couple of context shots.

The Coney Island signage just gets more and more bizarre and inexplicable…
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Apparently courtship rituals are very different here. I won’t even comment on the implication that a big hot dog is a better attention-grabber than flowers…
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
I wouldn’t even know where to start. (You may need to click on it for a better view)
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Umm… yeah. Please remember that I merely photographed it, and am not responsible for it in any way.
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
I have no idea what the Happy Landings has to do with anything, but I was very alarmed by the revelation that clowns are so dangerous that they can only be fed by robots.

Apparently, to not get a punching puppet is to postpone joy. I have postponed my joy indefinitely.

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Some kind of swoopy, spinny thing. I liked the curvy lines.
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Close-up of the giant Coney Island ferris wheel.
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
The ferris wheel again. I almost never do the special filter effects, but for some reason it just felt right.

This will probably not be the last sampling of the bizarre and inexplicable from Coney Island; after all, the bizarre and inexplicable is pretty much why I wanted to take pictures there in the first place.
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Ah yes, of course, animals you associate with the Himalayas: polar bears, penguins, and… frogs. (Yes, I am aware that the Himalayas don’t have polar bears or penguins either, but they’re not nearly as incongruous as a giant green frog)
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
I have no idea why this ride has little Regency-era vignettes painted on it.
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
The ride doesn’t bother me, it’s the fish with human faces in the background…
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
This is just a good overview of the general visual chaos in this particular subsection of the overall amusement complex. I especially like the goofy dragon on the left.

One of the great things about Coney Island is the lurid and/or inexplicable signs scattered all over. Here are some relatively mild samples, so as to start you off slowly:
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Apparently Chuy is the Wolf Man.
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Coney Island’s surrounding area is perhaps a little bit run-down.
