Final Coney Island Photoblogging

This is the last of the Coney Island photos for quite some time, although I do intend to go back after they make it over, just to see if they’ve stayed true to Coney Island’s lurid spirit.

Coney Island Arcade

Some sort of arcade game, of the non-video variety.

Coney Island Signs 8

Oh dear.

Coney Island Signs 9

I think this is an appropriate note to close on.

This is by no means the last of my NYC photos, and then I have DC and CA photos after that, still yet to be processed…

Final Coney Island Rideblogging

I’m almost out of Coney Island photos; just one more post after this one.

Coney Island Ride 29

I liked the ponytail action on this one, and didn’t even notice the strangely envious look on the girl on the right.

Coney Island Ride 30

“They say STAFF is a bad mother-” “Shut your mouth!”

Coney Island Pirateblogging

Ahhhrrr, matey! ‘Tis Pirates Of The, um, Mid-Atlantic.

Coney Island Pirate 1

This guy is just kinda sad-looking, really.

Coney Island Pirate 2

If you ever wondered what Howdy Doody would look like as a pirate…

Coney Island Pirate 3

You cannot tell me this guy did not get beat up constantly by the other pirates.

Still More Coney Island Rideblogging

Just some more random rides from Coney:

Coney Island Ride 22

The interior of a wee pirate ship, complete with non-functional redundant steering wheels. At least you can’t see the siren lights on the front…

Coney Island Ride 26

I found this kinda disturbing, but the kids seem to enjoy it.

Coney Island Ride 28

No-one wants to ride The Scrambler, which makes me wonder just how literal the name is.

Random Coney Island Photoblogging

Just some miscellaneous Coney Island photos that don’t really fit into any category:

Coney Cone

As I walked away, I actually heard someone behind me indignantly demanding, “Why was he taking a picture of that???” Fourlegs just gave them a helpless “What can you do?” shrug.

Coney Island Lights

Astroland as viewed from the Boardwalk.

Coney Island Freak Bar 2

The Freak Bar again.

Coney Island Volleyballblogging

Proving once again that I can take pictures of people in a pinch:

Coney Island Volleyball 1

You got served!

Coney Island Volleyball 2

She appears distinctly unimpressed.

Coney Island Volleyball 3

I love the random toddler who wandered into the frame. I don’t think I even saw him when I took the shot.

I don’t really have anything to add…

The last of the Cyclone photos:

Not the last of the Coney Island photos though, oh no.

As promised, some photos of people enjoying the Cyclone in all its rickety glory. I recommend clicking on them to get the full effect.

Coney Island Cyclone Photoblogging

Another one of the Coney Island star attractions I wanted to get pictures of was the Cyclone, which uses ricketiness instead of loop-de-loops to scare its riders:

Coney Island Cyclone 1

Coney Island Cyclone 11

Coney Island Cyclone 3

More on those Cyclone riders later…

Coney Island Non-Scary Ride Photoblogging

Some more completely non-scary rides from Coney Island:

Coney IslandRide 20

Well, okay, maybe the idea of a giant shoe giving me the eye is a little scary…

Coney Island Ride 21

One of the defining moments of our Coney Island excursion was when fourlegs was taking pictures of the kids on the ride, while I was waiting for them to clear out of the way so I could photograph the track. Hey, it has cool robots on the columns and everything.

Coney Island Ride 19

I suppose it will be a bit scarier once it leaves the ground. Also, note the color scheme, and then try to tell me that liberals aren’t patriotic.

Coney Island Bumper Car Photoblogging

I’ve never really been much of a thrillseeker, so rollercoasters and even ferris wheels have very little appeal for me (fourlegs and I did toy with the idea of going up on the bigass Wonder Wheel to get some aerial shots, but we had our hands full as it was). No, when I was a kid at Coney Island, what I loved was the bumper cars (um, and the video arcade). All these years later, they still look pretty damn fun:

More Coney Island Signageblogging

There really is a near-inexhaustible supply of weird signs chez Coney…

Coney Island Photos Butt.jpg

Teeheehee!!! *ahem* Sorry.

Coney Island Signs 6

Captain America feels very strongly about the head-on bumping, because it makes Lady Liberty cry. I think it is very possible that his tragic assassination was the work of a shadowy head-on bumping crime syndicate.

Coney Island Signs 7

But what about head-on grinding?

Coney Island Devilblogging

More from the funhouse. This is what it’s all about, right here:

Coney Island Devil 2

B&W closeup of the Dante’s Inferno devil.

Coney Island Devil 8

And here he is again with his little cackly friend.

Coney Island Devil 9

No self-respecting devil would ever be caught dead(?) without his pitchfork.

Coney Island Funhouse Photoblogging

Now, this was what I vaguely had in mind when I decided that I had to get me some pictures of Coney Island before it got all updated and modernized: Lurid funhouse horror thingies!

Coney Island Dragon 1

My desperate attempt to salvage a severely backlit situation. I think it ended up actually looking kinda cool.

Coney Island Skeletons 4

When zombies win Academy Awards.

Coney Island Monster 5

You can practically hear the deranged, cackling laughter. More on this guy and the hand he’s dangling from later.

Coney Island Rideblogging

I got a bunch of great reaction shots from this one ride, which tended to flip people upside-down a lot. In the interests of space, I’ll just post my favorite one, plus a couple of context shots.

Coney Island Ride 18

Whee!!!

Coney Island Ride 17

This is kinda like Coney Island in a nutshell.

Coney Island Signs 5

Let’s take a closer look at that mural in the background. Mmm… topless robots…

More Coney Island Sign Blogging

The Coney Island signage just gets more and more bizarre and inexplicable…

Coney Island Mermaid

Apparently courtship rituals are very different here. I won’t even comment on the implication that a big hot dog is a better attention-grabber than flowers…

Coney Island Signs 2

I wouldn’t even know where to start. (You may need to click on it for a better view)

Coney Island Signs 3

Umm… yeah. Please remember that I merely photographed it, and am not responsible for it in any way.

Coney Island Signs 4

I have no idea what the Happy Landings has to do with anything, but I was very alarmed by the revelation that clowns are so dangerous that they can only be fed by robots.

Random Coney Island Photoblogging

Just some more photos with no unifying theme:

Coney Island Ride 8

Looking up at the tent over the ride… whatever it was.

Coney Island Puppets

Apparently, to not get a punching puppet is to postpone joy. I have postponed my joy indefinitely.

Coney Island Ride 14

You might have to click on this one to see the little bits of stuff hanging down from the yellow part at the top. Those are people’s heads.

Coney Island Arcade Photoblogging

You know, it’s a shame Fellini never discovered Coney Island…

Coney Island Muppets

Please help us.

Coney Island Giant Clown

GAH! Suddenly I totally get why people are scared of clowns.

Coney Island Arm Wrestler 2

Wholesome fun for the whole family! You know, the thought occurs that there is probably more than one of these things out there…

Coney Island B&W Photoblogging

And yet still more fun at Coney Island…

Coney Island Ride 4

Some kind of swoopy, spinny thing. I liked the curvy lines.

Coney Island Wheel 2

Close-up of the giant Coney Island ferris wheel.

Coney Island Wheel 6

The ferris wheel again. I almost never do the special filter effects, but for some reason it just felt right.

Inexplicable Coney Island Photoblogging

This will probably not be the last sampling of the bizarre and inexplicable from Coney Island; after all, the bizarre and inexplicable is pretty much why I wanted to take pictures there in the first place.

Coney Island Frog

Ah yes, of course, animals you associate with the Himalayas: polar bears, penguins, and… frogs. (Yes, I am aware that the Himalayas don’t have polar bears or penguins either, but they’re not nearly as incongruous as a giant green frog)

Coney Island Regency

I have no idea why this ride has little Regency-era vignettes painted on it.

Coney Island Ride 2

The ride doesn’t bother me, it’s the fish with human faces in the background…

Coney Island Ride 3

This is just a good overview of the general visual chaos in this particular subsection of the overall amusement complex. I especially like the goofy dragon on the left.

Coney Island Bee Blogging

Coney Island Bee 2

Coney Island Bee 3

Coney Island Bee 4

Coney Island Signage Photoblogging

One of the great things about Coney Island is the lurid and/or inexplicable signs scattered all over. Here are some relatively mild samples, so as to start you off slowly:

Coney Island Freak Bar 3

Apparently Chuy is the Wolf Man.

Coney Island Pina Colada

Coney Island’s surrounding area is perhaps a little bit run-down.

Coney Island Fan Signs

What.
