This week’s quote is from the Roy Scheider helicopter movie Blue Thunder:
I think morals are good for ya - I love morals. And the moral of this story is, if you’re walking on eggs - don’t hop.
And, of course, there’ll be other people’s orangutans…
Aww.

Just a couple photos from the hotel in La Jolla:
Ceci n’est pas une pipe.
Not entirely sure what this is a warning for, but it sure is terrifying.

Hey, it’s not all animals.
The ceiling of a little rest alcove with benches, if I recall correctly.
Some bolty things, I don’t remember the context at all.

This week’s quote is from the Jim Varney classic, Ernest Goes To Camp (the Ernest movies are actually much funnier than most people realize):
I can take it, Miss St. Cloud. Real men can take it, and I am a real man. A man with a hearty smile, a stout back, with grit in his teeth and nails in his knuckles. A man who has never tasted quiche… Is that your smallest needle?
And, of course, there’ll be other people’s orangutans…
I like orangutans. They always seem so mellow and relaxed.

This week’s quote is from the kidnapping thriller, Mercy:
Who are you, mister? Some exploding white crumb who’s been eaten by the rats and the gutter dogs?
And, of course, there’ll be other people’s monkeys…
Monkeyriffic!

This week’s quote is from the Bela Lugosi voodoo classic, White Zombie:
We stopped to talk to some men. But our driver said they weren’t men at all. He said they were corpses.
And, of course, there’ll be other people’s peacocks…
This one was actually running around free. I could have petted him if I wanted to.

This week’s quote is from Once In A Blue Moon, which I apparently watched for some reason:
Do carrots go bad in space?
And, of course, there’ll be other people’s flamingoes…
Reflecty!

This week’s quote is from the Coen Brothers’ hilarious biopic, Ed Wood:
I can’t see the difference - I’m color blind. But I like the dark grey one.
And, of course, there’ll be other people’s flamingoes:
The first of many from the San Diego Zoo…

The last of the La Jolla photos. Up next: Demolition!
Ceiling fan at the vegan restaurant just before I left for the airport.
Sunset, complete with seagull and everything. Actually from a few days before, but it’s perfect as an image of satisfying closure.

This is the next-to-last batch of San Diego/La Jolla photos, taken from my Israeli cousin’s patio and backyard… which I hope are still there.
The patio roof.
Another view of the roof, plus a birdfeeder.
Random shadow.
The view from the backyard.

Some photos from Grandma’s operating theatre:
One of the sculptures was in need of some minor surgery.
Just think positive thoughts.
The procedure has a very high rate of success, as you can see.

Okay, this is the last of the Salk Institute photos, and I think some of you are relieved. Me, I like bleak.
I’m hoping that next year we get some time to prowl around the UCSD campus, which has some very eccentric and intriguing architecture indeed.

Since one of the family reunion attendees (also named Eli) is an architect, he and his dad and I went on a little photo pilgrimage to the Salk Institute, designed by Louis Kahn. So there were, in fact, two Elis with Nikon digital SLRs wandering around the same place at the same time, which probably doesn’t happen a lot.
Unfortunately, the buildings are all kind of a beige/sandy color, which is not very appealing in color, and kind of dingy in B&W, so the photo processing was a bit of a challenge. But I think I still managed to salvage a few shots that don’t totally suck.

Some rather abstract pictures from La Jolla and San Diego:
A glass sculpture in the window of an art store in La Jolla.
The ceiling of a very good Thai restaurant, also in La Jolla.
Part of a restaurant sign in Balboa Park, where all San Diego’s museums are.

The last of the photos from Getty Villa.
Some table umbrellas near the entrance/exit area.
The corridor on the way out.
Wider view of the corridor.

I’m just a sucker for architecture.
I just really like the austerity of black & white.
But sometimes color is nice too.
Especially when you’ve got a nice deep blue sky.

More statue photos from Getty Villa:
My cousin likes to take pictures of statue butts.
Winged Mercury takes a load off.
An expression of dismay that can only mean, “I have bird poop on my head.”

Once again, no particular theme, except that they’re all vertical, and all in glorious Gettycolor:
Nature! All right, enough of that.
Columns!
Umm… Architecture!

More pics with no theme:
It’s um, an ancient Greco-Roman tube, containing, um, ancient Greco-Roman electrical wiring.
It looks very inviting, somehow.
Statues love flowers!
The Greek God Dionysus asks his bro to bring him back a beer, since he’s already up.

Yes, Getty Villa has a garden. A Greco-Roman garden. Lots of herbs. And bees.
No, I didn’t take any pictures of the herbs, because quite frankly, they don’t look all that interesting.

Some aquatic-y photos from Getty Villa:
It’s a satyr sitting on top of a wineskin. Nothing gross.
Lilies!
Lily pad closeup. I liked the shadows. Yes, I know the other one’s in B&W. I just like this one better in color, okay?
