Zoo Photoblogging

Some zoo pictures. I’ll probably have a lot more from the DC zoo, but I haven’t even finished processing my 1500 New York photos yet…

Lemur 1

A lemur of some sort.

Porcupine 1

Porcupine!

Crane 1

Crane, or stork. I have no idea what the difference is. It kinda looks like he’s about to check his mail…

NYC Birdblogging

Some bird photos from Jacob Riis Park.

The Council has spoken. There is no appeal.

Take My Leave… Please

More leaves, just because spork likes them so much. Maybe one more South Carolina post after this one, and then onto NYC photos… which I will hopefully have processed by then.

Backlit in black & white.

Backlit ivy.

I thought this one was almost alarming.

And I found this one… strangely arousing for some reason. Posted by Picasa

Leafy Photoblogging

I’m just about to head out to take some NYC pics, so here are some very not-NYC pics in the meantime:

I liked the stark lighting on these.

I liked the funky shadow.

More holly, looking very geometrical.

Mmm, backlighting… Posted by Picasa

Airport Natureblogging

VICTORY IS MINE!!!

*ahem*

Sorry. I, ah, scored the only table at the airport food court with a power outlet. I’m… an enormous geek.

Anyway, this is not actually photos of Nature at the airport, merely photos of Nature posted from the airport. And you shall see once again why Nature photography really is not my thing…

Life from Death, or some kind of cosmic Wheel-Of-Life stuff like that.

Okay, reflections I can do. I like reflections.

Bark! Barkbarkbarkbarkbarkbark!!!

Holly. I think this is some kinda seasonal thing. Posted by Picasa

Stalling-For-Time Photoblogging

Well, I’m working my way through reading something long, all for a fairly frivolous post to come, so here are some more park photos in the meantime…

Geese on the wing. Or, um, ducks. I can never tell…

Fishin’.

And yet more leaves – the damn park was lousy with ‘em.

More Park B&W Blogging

Some more pictures from the park; some of them are even of quasi-parklike kinds of things.

It’s a branch… in a lake.

Under the picnic table.

Spooky underwater photography. It looks like it was taken in 1840 or something…

More fun with trashcans.

Leaf Photoblogging

It’s, um, pictures of leaves. Exciting!

Mmm, leaf BBQ…

More leafs on a grill.

And another.

Leaves in their natural element.

Yes, I Still Have A Camera.

In case anyone’s been wondering about the recent dearth of photoblogging, I’ve been doing a lot of volunteer data entry for some of the local progressive organizations on my nights and weekends, so I haven’t had a lot of time for photographical oot-and-abootness. Hopefully the situation will improve after the election.

I have managed to take a few pictures, plus I have some more stashed away on my wee backup camera which look like they might not suck too awfully.

This guy again.

Backlit flower back.

And another.

B&W Charlotte Photoblogging

I’ve been waiting for a chance to slip in some pictures from my business trip to Charlotte, and I guess this is it.

Sort-of awning at the Hilton, where I was not staying.

Leaves greet the water
In black and white reflections
Now they’re on my blog.

Bridge thingy and duck.

And another duck.

Friday Quote & Squirrel Action Sequence Blogging

This week’s quote is from The House Of Yes, a peculiar indie film where Parker Posey thinks she’s Jackie Onassis. Also it has Freddie Prinze Jr. Feh.

“Pennsylvania’s just this state that gets in the way when you want to go someplace else.”

And, of course, there’ll be other people’s squirrels…

I’m really not entirely sure what his plan was…

Kissed With A Seal

Well, I’m still trying to recover my political mojo, which seems to have gotten lost somewhere on the way to California. In the meantime, enjoy some frolicsome sea creatures!

Taking a quick dip.

Seals are somewhat… less than graceful at the transition from sea to land.

Seal karaoke. Unfortunately, they only sing along to songs by Seal…

I’m too sexy for my rock…

Vacation Birds-And-Making-Fun-Of-Yakov-Smirnoff Blogging

Okay, back to the vacation photos. Today’s theme is… Birdies!

This was terribly overexposed, and when I tried to pull the brightness back down I thought it actually looked kinda cool.

If you want to see what a pelican in flight really looks like…

Just chillin’. No big whoop.

Cranky seagull.

In Soviet Russia, birdie watches you!

Did anyone ever have an easier gig than Yakov Smirnoff? I mean, how hard could that schtick be? I wonder if he was like the Russian Jerry Seinfeld before he defected? “And what is with all these tractor quotas? Don’t we have enough tractors already?”

Or maybe he was the Russian Gallagher, and he defected because beets and potatoes spatter so poorly…

Vacation Botanical Blogging

In case anyone’s wondering why I haven’t posted many vacation photos, my preferred upload tool (Hello/BloggerBot) is hosed, and I really don’t like Blogger’s Upload Image tool, because it makes resized images look like total crap. But since the last time BloggerBot broke, it stayed broken for weeks, I guess I have to live with it.

I recommend clicking on the pictures for full-size versions that don’t look like total crap.

Today’s installment is from some botanical gardens at Balboa Park in San Diego:

Consider the lily.

Or, if you’re not quite up to that, consider the lily pads.

I’m pretty sure this is what Alien Space Potatoes look like.

Oh, I’m being followed by a fern shadow…
Fern shadow, fern shadow…

Actual Vacation Photoblogging

Hokay, I just checked out of the Chateau, and I’m currently sitting on a bench outside waiting for my uncle to pick me up. There seems to be fairly decent non-Chateau wifi out here, so I can essay some more photoblogging.

It’s… umm… a glowing plant of some sort.

It’s… a street sign! Wow, this vacation just gets more and more exciting, don’t it.

Okay, how about something moving?

Well, they were moving, but I think they’re stopped. I like the rearview mirror reflection, and the reflection of the rearview mirror reflection.

I probably won’t be posting much of anything until tomorrow morning at the earliest, although that might change if I can get me some airport wifi. The trip back is going to be Teh Suck: 11PM redeye with 4:30AM stopover in O’Hare. Whee.

Arts Festival Organicblogging

Yes, I did in fact take some pictures of living things at the Three Rivers Arts Festival yesterday…

Everybody loves bubbles!

The majestic bull pigeon, captured in mid-flight. Actually, I think he was just trying to impress the chicks…

Botanical Photoblogging

The Photo Odyssey continues, with a paltry semblance of Nature.

How leaves sleep.

(I particularly like this one because it feels like I’m sharing something secret and intimate, even though it’s really just a leaf sitting on another leaf, partially hidden by a third leaf. Maybe it’s the whole kinky interspecies thing: Garden Fever!)

A rose is a rose is a photo.

(At least, I think it’s a rose. I’m… botanically challenged.)

A more bashful rose, or roselike thingy.

I’m sorry, the lawn officer has just stepped out. Please take a seat and he will be with you momentarily.

Luck In My Eyes

Got lucky again today. Only once, though – I had to be somewhere.

I either have superhuman corrected vision and pattern-recognition skills, or just some kind of instinctive affinity for freakish mutants.

Saturday Leaf Blogging

Yes, more pictures of leaves. Just local Pittsburgh ones this time, though. None of those exotic South Carolina leaves or anything like that.

My attempt to read the tree leaves was woefully unsuccessful.

Mutant Leaf #1: Bit early in the year for this, innit?

Mutant Leaf #2: Looks a bit like a clownfish, actually…

Random Pittsburgh Photoblogging

Just some recent photos with no particular theme, other than recentness.

It’s just tired and shagged out after a long stalk.

I put a lot of thought into this post.

Black & white clouds are always a nice change of pace.

Look! Nature!

Beauty Botanical Photoblogging

Okay, one last attempts at some beauty shots from the botanical gardens.

Please bear in mind that I have no idea what I’m talking about.

Just so we’re clear on this, I have no idea what any flowers are called. Tulips, maybe? Idunno. I’ll just call them “Purple Flower Thingies.”

I think someone may have said these are forget-me-nots, but I… well…

Baby ferns! I think.

Some kind of, um, white flowers…

Are ya feelin’ educated yet?

Some more… botanical pictures from the botanical gardens. Trying to take my mind off things a bit.

I generally try to avoid backlighting, but sometimes one has to make exceptions.

Wildlife Photoblogging II

More fun with wildlife!

Why a duck?

My sources advised me that this was a copperhead, and that I would be wise not to get any closer.

How you doin’?

Wildlife Photoblogging I

The shadowy and mysterious Codename V. was kind enough to take me to a local botanical garden, so I got some pictures of critters, flowers, leaves, construction equipment, and that sort of thing. I figured I’d start with some of the critters:

Welcome to… Turtle Island!
(Gamera is really neat, Gamera is made of meat…)

Apparently bumblebees are camera-shy. As soon as I draw a… beed on one, it darts away. This was the best pic I could get of its majestic flight. I wasn’t entirely sure if it was acceptable, but I obtained approval from a Licensed Bee Quality Inspector.

The bumblebees are a bit easier to photograph when they’re busy eating, or harvesting pollen, or whatever it is that bees do. Now, butterflies, on the other hand…

Fun With Tidepools

Still more from La Jolla/San Diego. I maxed out two memory cards with tidepool pictures, so you may be seeing a few more…

It kinda looks like a miniature canyon, really. With some really big graffiti.

More Belated Vacation Photoblogging

As I said earlier, I finally have some time to start getting caught up on processing the photos from my trip to California… about a month ago. I suppose they’re hopelessly stale by now, but I still kinda like some of ‘em.

In other photo news, I think I successfully removed a pair of pesky dust specks from my sensor by blowing on them with an ear syringe (thanks to my uncle for the tip), and I also reorganized my online photo album into more discrete categories. Huzzah!

The overhead light in my grandmother’s elevator.

EschaCon Picnic Online Gallery

Couldn’t resist posting a couple of nature shots from the picnic…

Mama Bear and Baby Bears look on as Papa Bear sticks his head in a tree to forage for honey.

The Atriots prepare to descend on the picnic site like a swarm of… eaty things. Posted by Picasa

In other news, a more comprehensive collection of my EschaCon Picnic photos can be found here.

Maybe now I can get back to catching up on the photos from my last trip…

The Birds And The Boats, Part II

God help us all.
