Netroots Nation Opening Keynote Photoblogging Continues

I’m posting ’em almost as fast as I can process ’em.  Which is not very.

John Fetterman, Mayor of Braddock. I’m pretty sure that if your mayor has “I will make you hurt.” tattooed on his arm, you win.

Netroots Nation Debra Bowen Photoblogging

Debra Bowen has very fast hands. They just kind of flash up out of nowhere, gesture for a split-second, and disappear again. If the CA Secretary Of State thing doesn’t work out, she could totally go into mixed martial arts ultimate fighting or something.

Raven Brooks did a fantastic job making Netroots Nation work, but he doesn’t really have any gestures:

I did take multiple pictures, but they all looked more or less like this one…

Final Netrots Nation Econ Panel Photoblogging

The last of the econ panel:
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Hellooooo!

(Maybe I’m biased because I took it, but I think this is the best Digby photo ever)

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
I like the arched eyebrow.

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Dave Johnson gesticulating while the mic protects Monica Sanchez’s identity.

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Digby and Bill Scher pondering.

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Dave Johnson and the mystery woman again.

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Economics is very close to Dave’s heart.

Up next: Opening keynote speakers. Chuck Rocha, Raven Brooks, Judd Legum, Debra Bowen, Simon Rosenberg, John Fetterman, Dan Onorato, Brad Miller, and I might have more Bill Clinton.

Still More Econ Panel Photoblogging

One of the catch-22s of trying to take pictures of panelists and speakers is that they’re usually at their most animated and interesting and gesture-y when they’re speaking… but they’re also moving their mouths to shape words, and while it’s not really visible to the naked eye, when the camera freezes them, you can get some fairly unflattering results.  That’s why I check out the panelists who aren’t speaking, hoping to catch someone reacting or fidgeting interestingly, or just looking thoughtful.

None of that applies to this panel more than any other – I just thought it worth mentioning, especially since this post is mostly reaction shots.
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Right about now I’m thinking it might be a good time to stand up and get a higher camera angle…

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Ah yes, that’s much better.

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Dave Johnson again.

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
I think this is my favorite Monica Sanchez photo.

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
I, um, really liked Monica’s hair. Photographically speaking, I mean.

Apparently she’s been taking gesturing lessons from Bill.

Netroots Nation Econ Panel Photoblogging

Technically, the panel wasn’t so much about economics as how to talk about economics. And don’t ask me why some pictures are in color and some are in black & white. I decide on a case-by-case basis, and it usually depends on how which version delineates lines and shapes better, whether the color adds anything to the photo, and which version I did a better job of processing on.
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Digby is a total sweetheart. Spork incident and I wandered over to her table after the closing keynote, and she was very friendly and generous with her time.

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Bill Scher embarrasses Digby with effusive and well-deserved praise.

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Bill Scher, moderating.

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Dave Johnson.

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
I liked the light gradient on the wall over there. Also, that is totally Bill Scher’s go-to gesture.

Netroots Nation Polling Panel Photoblogging

A little more of a grab bag, like my first NN post:
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
This is much more my speed, photographically speaking. I will probably subject you to a barrage of pictures of the convention center itself at some point. (It wouldn’t be the first time.)

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Charlie Cook makes a point while Greg/DemFromCT ponders.

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Nate Silver and roughly 45% of Charles Franklin. At least, I think it’s 45% – my sample size is admittedly very small.

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Ooo, I caught Nate without his glasses. Now I can update my Might-Potentially-Be-Superman list.

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Another Mark Blumenthal picture I kind of like.

Up next: The economics panel, with Bill Scher, Digby, Monica Sanchez, and Dave Johnson.

Netroots Nation Mark Blumenthal Photoblogging

The Artist Formerly Known As Mystery Pollster:
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Reviewing his notes.

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
I can’t really think of anything to say about this one, other than that I like it.

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
After Nate Silver delivered most of his presentation with his fingers crossed, Greg decided it would be a good idea to swear Mark in, just to be on the safe side.

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
“This is vertical.”

From the Nate Silver portion of the polling panel:

Charlie Cook looks on in awe.

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
I like the camera blur when people are gesturing vigorously.

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
He kinda looks like he’s gathering energies to throw a fireball or something.

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Wait, is he crossing his fingers? Was everything he told us a lie?

Netroots Nation Charles Franklin Photoblogging

Charles Franklin, from Thursday’s polling panel.  (Yes, aside from the Big Dog photos, I intend to post everything in chronological order…)
* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Of all the panelists and speakers, I think Professor Franklin’s body language is my favorite.

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
Professor Franklin leads the audience through some vigorous stretching exercises to ensure that no one accidentally polls something.

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *
What is it about polling experts and putting things on top of other things?

Netroots Nation Clinton Photoblogging

I got some pretty good pictures of the Big Dog at the NN keynote, although I’ll probably have to redo the processing when I have some more free time – Picasa on a netbook just isn’t good enough, but it’s all I can do for now.

Netroots Nation Photoblogging!

Here it is, the first batch of photos from today’s panels. These four are from the How To Read Polls panel with Greg Dworkin (DemFromCT), Charlie Cook, Charles Franklin, Mark Blumenthal, and Nate Silver. Apologies for any shortcomings in photo quality. There wasn’t much light, and I’m using Picasa on a netbook instead of Lightroom on a laptop. I may or may not go back and redo some of these.

Full album can be found here, will be updated sporadically.
