Well, once again we only got 6 people. So we had regular batting practice (I did pretty good – three home runs and a bunch of other deep shots and line drives when I wasn’t hitting dinky pop-ups off the handle), followed by another every-man-for-himself quasi-game, which I won 3-1-1-1-0-0, or something like that. The absence of any bona-fide power hitters probably helped. I ended up 6-for-8 with 3 runs and 3 RBI, and played okay defense, despite being on the infield most of the day.

Current Stats: 28 games, .581 BA (118-203), 18 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 64 runs, 43 RBI.

Well, we only got six people today (damn Stillers), so we couldn’t really have a proper game, so first we had some batting practice (I hit one out, plus a bunch of other really solid line drives and warning-track shots), followed by a sort of every-man-for-himself game-slash-batting practice. I ended up 8-for-12 with 2 runs, 2 RBI, and played some pretty good defense.

It’s probably going to be slim pickins now that football season is underway.

Current Stats: 27 games, .574 BA (112-195), 18 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 61 runs, 40 RBI.

Stats include a very abbreviated Wednesday game (1-3, 1 R).

WOOHOO!!! Finally, I hit one out! With at least 2-3 games to spare. Praise Jebus for juiced-up fancy bats. First at-bat was a high fly ball to center that just kept carrying and carrying. It just kind of got exponentially worse from there, though. Next at-bat was a double, followed by a single, followed by a hard-hit out, followed by two lame routine outs. When all was said and done, 3-for-6 with a home run, a double, 3 runs, and 3 RBIs. Fairly solid in the field, my outfield mojo appears undiminished by the 2-week layoff. Oh, and we lost. By something in the vicinity of 3-5 runs, but who’s counting?

Current Stats: 25 games, .572 BA (103-180), 18 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR*, 58 runs, 38 RBI.

*Home runs over the fence are counted as doubles in the Sunday game, ‘cuz the fence is so short that people other than me hit them out all the time…

Heed!!! Move!!!

Woohoo! I got my 100th hit of the season! I have no idea if this is really a meaningful milestone, but it sounds kinda cool, and it means I’m averaging a hair over 4 hits per game (of course, I’m also averaging almost 7 at-bats per game…).

Anyway, today was the day for trying out the new gear for the EschaCon softball game – the fanciest of the new bats has a great sweet spot, but it’s very small, and the rest of the bat sucks. So if you hit it on the sweet spot, it’s a rocket (I hit two balls out in a short batting practice session), but if you miss, it kinda thunks weakly. My spare gloves got some use, and I think I broke in my new cleats pretty well, too.

Oh yeah, the game. My team got pretty well crushed, something like 20-12, but I had a decent game at the plate, hitting the ball sharply up the middle and opposite field: 5-for-7 with 2 doubles, 2 runs, and 3 RBIs. Defense left a bit to be desired, especially on fly balls close to the fence, which have always been my achilles heel. Well, that and throwing. And ground balls. And- I’ll come in again.

Current Stats: 24 games, .575 BA (100-174), 17 2B, 1 3B, 55 runs, 35 RBI.

Incredibly Belated Wednesday Softball Blogging

Yeah, I know, I know. But I had a ton of photos to process, and we went out after softball on Wednesday, and Thursday was Drinking Liberally, so I spent most of Friday night doing the actual processing.

Anyway, the softball itself went pretty well – I think I really do have my stroke back, going 6-for-7 with a double, 3 runs, and 4 RBIs. And after a couple of hiccups in the early going, it looks like my defense is almost all the way back, except for the throwing. The rest of the team kindly chipped in to get some photos of me in action, too.

Current Stats: 23 games, .569 BA (95-167), 15 2B, 1 3B, 53 runs, 32 RBI.

And I’m off!

Well, we didn’t have enough people for an actual game, so we just had some batting practice. That went pretty well – I hit lots of solid line drives and even a home run (Woohoo!). In the field, I got to almost everything, but didn’t actually catch a whole lot, although I did have one nice leaping, spinning catch on a line drive at third base.

Current Stats: 22 games, .556 BA (89-160), 14 2B, 1 3B, 50 runs, 28 RBI.

Well. Apparently a week and a half is all I need for my defensive skills to evaporate completely. Couldn’t read the ball (everything went way over my head), couldn’t handle the ball cleanly, couldn’t throw the ball… Just completely crap, really. Hitting was okay, 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI, but really nothing spectacular, including one hit that travelled about 3 feet.

But we had a delicious Argentinean barbecue after the game!

Current Stats: 22 games, .556 BA (89-160), 14 2B, 1 3B, 50 runs, 28 RBI.

Kind of a Jekyll & Hyde doubleheader today. I was only 2-for-7 in the first game, but I did great on defense – had an inning where I made all three putouts, had some good catches and was throwing really well (forced one runner out at second, made some strong throws to the plate to hold runners at third). I was 6-for-8 with a double in the second game, but my defense mostly fell apart. So an all-defense game, and an all-offense game, pretty much. Net result: 8-for-15 with a double, 5 runs, and 3 RBIs.

Oh, and my team got crushed in both games, despite reshuffling the teams between games. The good news, I think I have my stroke back after being pretty lost for a few games.

Current Stats: 21 games, .555 BA (86-155), 14 2B, 1 3B, 49 runs, 27 RBI.

Oh, perfect ball placement…

More excellent ball placement, although it’d be cool if it was just a little bit lower… Posted by Picasa

Pictures are a little grainy – I forgot to change my “film” speed back after some indoor shots. On the plus side, I had nice action-freezing shutter speeds… On the minus side, I was out in the field when the two deer appeared in right field. Dang.

Well, the average continues to slowly decline, but at least I was productive. 4-for-8, but with a bases-loaded 2-run double, a triple, 3 runs, and 3 RBIs. Discerning baseball fans will note that I was a home run shy of the cycle, which was not lost on me, and didn’t really help my hitting too much. A home run would theoretically not be that hard for me to hit, even as power-deficient as I am – I just have to get the ball over, past, or between the outfielders in left, where it’ll roll a long, long way – but it hasn’t even come close to happening yet.

Not too shabby in the field, except for one line drive that I completely and utterly lost in the sun, which is just brutal in left, and had to fight off the sun to just barely catch another one. Pretty good day throwing – managed to hold one or two people to triples on balls to the wall, and helped throw someone out at home plate, so that’s something. My arm is not that great, but throwing the ball just feels really good – and like with hitting, the better the throw/hit, the better it feels.

Went out with the other players afterwards, and a good time was had by all – but I probably stayed out a bit too late…

Current Stats: 19 games, .553 BA (78-141), 13 2B, 1 3B, 44 runs, 24 RBI.

Took some action shots this time, although it’s a bit more difficult with the fading light and all. I’ll try bumping up my “film” speed next week.

This was admittedly probably more impressive if you saw it live, but it was one hell of a catch. Please, take my word for it and make appropriate oohs and aahs.

Deep down, I know I really shouldn’t use this shot, but I still kinda like it… Posted by Picasa

Ugh. We squeaked out a one-run win, but a pretty crappy game for me. Started out well, 4 for my first 5 with 2 runs and and an RBI, but closed out with an unproductive 1-for-6 (so 5-for-11 overall), with much choking with runners in scoring position. Defense was okay except for one bad drop; not too many fly balls, but I was throwing pretty well…

Oh, and something stung or bit or stuck me really badly on my heel when I was trying to retrieve a batting practice home run. No idea what it was, but I saw something flying off after a really sharp, stabbing pain completely out of proportion to the size of the wound. I don’t think it was a sting, it’s not swollen or itchy or anything. And I had a ball ricochet off my other shin… Fun times.

Current Stats: 18 games, .556 BA (74-133), 12 2B, 41 runs, 21 RBI.

No action shots today – we were 5-on-5, so when I wasn’t hitting or baserunning, I was pitching, catching or playing first – not much time for photos.

Well, the highlight of today’s game was when a cop car showed up to check up on us, then quickly hightailed it away when Stu (shown sliding below) hit a home run/double (over the fence is a double) right at it. Beautiful.

My team won a 19-18 nailbiter, although I didn’t contribute a whole lot (3 for 7 with a double and 3 runs), except on the mound, where I served up a bunch of home run/doubles and hits to my teammates. Had a couple of nice catches, and even handled a grounder back to the mound, but muffed an easy fly ball pretty badly. Matt filled in as official photographer for a bit, so there are actually some pictures of me in action…

Current Stats: 17 games, .566 BA (69-122), 12 2B, 39 runs, 20 RBI.

Well, given that third base and the entire home plate area was underwater, and only two other people showed up at gametime, it looked pretty bleak at first. But people showed up, and we made some adjustments, and ended up getting in what I’m pretty sure was a full game. Pretty productive day at the plate despite a coupla popups: 6 for 9 with two doubles, 5 runs, and 4 RBIs. Was really clubbing the ball by the end of the night, with a rocket sac fly and a bases-loaded double to the centerfield fence – or at least the corner of the wall and the Porta-Potty…

No screwups in the outfield, although there weren’t many fly balls hit my way. With no left-field fence, one has to be all about cutting the ball off no matter what, and it’s a fast track out there. So I’m a little bruised up. But I have my postgame Dr Pepper, so I’m happy.

Current Stats: 16 games, .574 BA (66-115), 11 2B, 36 runs, 20 RBI.

In theory, these numbers could be multiplied by 10 to project them out for a full baseball season…

Feh. Frustrating game. Hit almost everything hard, but right at people, mostly on the ground. Ended up 4 for 10 with 2 runs and an RBI, and we just squeaked it out in the bottom of the ninth. Very hit & miss in the outfield, either nice catches or ugly misplays.

Current Stats: 15 games, .566 BA (60-106), 9 2B, 31 runs, 16 RBI.

Well, I have managed to wrangle my way into a Wednesday night softball game by way of one of the Sunday softballers (thanks, Anders!). They’re a slightly older crowd, but very good players, and a pleasantly loose, friendly atmosphere. I had a great line-drive batting practice, but it didn’t translate well to the actual game, where I went 5-10 with two runs and a double, including a line shot right at somebody. Was pretty decent in the outfield with some nice running catches, but got burned a few times by balls that got over me or past me (very deep leftfield). Weirdest play was a shallow fly ball I couldn’t quite get to, that bounced off my knee… right to second base for a forceout. They don’t keep score, so I’m not entirely sure who won.

No pictures for now, since I don’t really know anyone yet.

Current Stats: 14 games, .583 BA (56-96), 9 2B, 29 runs, 15 RBI.

Damn, it was hot today. Turnout was… not. We didn’t have enough players at first, so we just had batting practice. We were just about to give up when a couple more people showed up, and we played a short 5-on-5 game, which is kinda goofy. Basically, right field is foul, and the batting team has to supply their own pitcher, catcher, and first baseman. If you get any more than one person on base, you need to have “ghost runners.” Crazy.

Anyway, we won in the bottom of the fifth, and I went 4 for 5 with a run and an RBI (and the one out was a shot that was caught at the warning track). Had a really good day in the field, running all over the place and catching pretty much everything – I even had a nice over-the-shoulder catch on a ball over my head during batting practice. Gotta love that.

Then to Piper’s Pub for an incredibly messy portabello burger, and I will shortly be heading out to see Save The Green Planet at Pittsburgh Filmmakers with Rich. It’s an insane Korean movie about a guy who becomes convinced that a CEO is really a member of an alien race plotting to invade the Earth. Fun stuff.

Current Stats: 13 games, .593 BA (51-86), 8 2B, 27 runs, 15 RBI.

Well, this one was pret-ty damn lopsided – I think we won by more than 20 runs or something. Kind of a mediocre game for me, 5 for 10 with 3 runs but 3 pop-ups. I did have one caught at the fence that probably would have gone out if there hadn’t been a fielder there. Oh well. Fielding was less than brilliant, but I didn’t really get much action in left.

Current Stats: 12 games, .580 BA (47-81), 8 2B, 26 runs, 14 RBI.

Another good day at the plate – 6 for 7 with 5 runs, and a laser RBI ground-rule double to the left-center gap, and my team won 10-5 (I think). A little mixed in the outfield – I was really sharp on fly balls again, but pretty crappy at cutting off anything on the ground.

I’ve switched to a heavier bat (which I hit the double with) because I’m starting to have doubts about the structural integrity of my regular bat, which seems to have no sweet spot lately – it makes kind of a clanky sound, and the ball doesn’t seem to travel real well. It’s not just me that it does this with, either.

Current Stats: 11 games, .592 BA (42-71), 8 2B, 23 runs, 14 RBI.

Well, I had easily my best game of the season, but we still lost, 17-11 (I think). Only played 7 innings because the sun and the heat was just brutal out there. My legs were pretty much rubber by the 5th. But I still somehow managed to go 7 for 7 with a double, an RBI, and 3 runs, and played flawless defense – I think my fly ball radar is finally locked in.

Not a lot of pics, because we only had six players, which doesn’t leave a lot of time between at-bats… or pitching… or catching, since each team had to provide their own.

Current Stats: 10 games, .563 BA (36-64), 7 2B, 18 runs, 13 RBI.

I really need to cut back on the softball photos. Filled up the damn memory card: 171 shots. Only just finished processing (okay, there were some sci-fi movies). Gah.

Pretty good game! 7-10, two doubles, two runs, and an RBI, didn’t screw up too badly in the field. And we won by one run in 11 innings. Followed by yummy Memorial Day cookout with lots of hot dogs, sausage, and ribs. But no plates. Had time to explore around the field with my camera, and found some pretty interesting stuff, like the car wreckage in the woods beyond the right-field fence.

Current Stats: 9 games, .509 BA (29-57), 6 2B, 15 runs, 12 RBI.

Another doubleheader, this time a split. Once again started out for crap at the plate (0-3), but came on strong and ended up 5-10 with a double, 4 runs, and 2 RBI. Fielding also started out shaky, but was solid after a nice running catch on a liner to my left. Throwing was pretty decent, too.

I think I’m taking too many pictures now, though – I only just finished processing them all, and I even skipped some.

Doubleheader today! Was pretty crap in the first game, popping stuff up all over the place, which is not like me – I’m the guy who swings at pitches over my head and still manages to pound them into the dirt. We won both games though, so it’s all good.

I resorted to going back to my funky pigeon-toed stance with the leg-kick, and that seemed to get me back into a ground-ball/line-drive groove, thankfully. 6-12 with a double, 5 runs, and 2 RBI overall. Not a whole lot of action in the outfield- one catch, and a few more I couldn’t quite get to. Threw the ball better than usual, but didn’t actually throw anyone out…

Current stats: 6 games, .459 BA (17-37), 3 2B, 9 runs, 9 RBI.

Pretty crap day at the plate – I did hit three nice line drives, but one of them was right at someone, and another one was foul. Got a two-run double out of the other one, though. 3-9 overall, with the double and 2 RBI. Fielding was much improved, (almost) everything that hit my glove stuck, including a sweet running catch, and my arm was decent as well.
